Ford Of Canada To Drop Mask Mandates At All Facilities

Earlier this month, Ford and the United Auto Worker’s union (UAW) dropped mask mandates at all of the automaker’s U.S.-based plants for all workers, regardless of vaccination status, as COVID-19 cases have fallen dramatically in recent weeks. Now, Ford of Canada and Unifor are following suit by dropping mask mandates at all of its facilities starting March 28th, citing falling cases and recent updates to public health guidance related to indoor mask usage.

Workers that wish to continue to wear a mask will be able to do so, and Ford of Canada will provide them to workers if needed. Employees will still be required to fill out a COVID-19 daily self-certification survey before entering a Blue Oval facility, and the automaker is still encouraging workers to practice physical distancing and proper handwashing while on the job site. Ford Canada also left the door open for it to reestablish mask mandates if necessary, and will continue to monitor the situation.

Over the past two years or so, Ford assembly plants have mostly had some sort of face mask policy in place. Back in June of 2021 as cases were dropping, the UAW and Ford ended mask mandates for vaccinated workers, but that didn’t last long, as roughly one month later, the mandates for some Ford assembly plants were reinstituted as the Delta variant caused cases to surge, and shortly after that, all other facilities followed suit. In January, changing guidance from the CDC prompted Ford to allow its workers to wear N95 or KN95 masks before the mandates were nixed altogether earlier this month.

Meanwhile, Ford of Canada announced that it would be mandating COVID-19 vaccines for all of its employees last fall, but most recently delayed that vaccine mandate deadline to March 28th, while UAW Ford workers won’t be required to get vaccinated.
