Ford Ranked Second In Top 20 Leased Makes List During Q4 2021

As Ford Authority reported last week, Experian’s Q4 2021 Auto Finance Insights Report recently found that the overwhelming majority of Ford buyers chose to finance their vehicles last quarter – 80.32 percent, versus the 19.68 percent that opted to lease. That ranked Ford near the top of all automakers in that regard, but the same Experian report also found that The Blue Oval ranked second on the top 20 leased makes list during Q4 of 2021 as well.

Ford’s second-place ranking on the top 20 leased makes list applies to the entire U.S. market – not the percentages of leases within Ford’s own lineup, which helps this data make a bit more sense. Regardless, Ford vehicles represented 8.75 percent of total leased vehicles last quarter, behind only Honda, which came in at 11.34 percent. Ford was followed by Toyota (8.69 percent), Jeep (6.80 percent), Chevrolet (6.22 percent), BMW (5.83 percent), Nissan (5.33 percent), Hyundai (5.16 percent), Kia (4.91 percent), Volkswagen (4.91 percent), Subaru (3.55 percent), Mercedes-Benz (3.14 percent), Mazda (3.12 percent), Lexus (2.84 percent), Tesla (2.42 percent), Acura (1.98 percent), Ram (1.80 percent), Audi (1.77 percent), Volvo (1.65 percent), and GMC (1.49 percent).

This data isn’t terribly surprising, as many FoMoCo vehicles – including the Ford F-150, which was the fourth most leased vehicle in the last quarter – have long been popular among those looking to lease a vehicle. Some – like the Ford Bronco and Ford F-150 Lightning – have higher residual values than the competition, which makes those vehicles attractive to lessees as well.

However, Ford has been canceling lease deals on a number of in-demand Blue Oval vehicles in recent months, including the F-150 Lightning, which is not eligible for Ford’s Red Carpet Lease deal, as well as the 2022 Ford Maverick, which is no longer eligible for any lease deals at all after Ford stopped taking orders for the red-hot compact pickup earlier this year.
