Three Nascar Mustangs Penalized During Las Vegas Qualifying

Five Nascar teams were penalized for failing pre-qualifying inspection multiple times ahead of Sunday’s racing event at Las Vegas. Of those five teams, three were Next Gen Ford Mustangs.

Kevin Harvick, No. 4; Harrison Burton, No. 21; and Todd Gilliland, No. 38 were subjected to several penalties following their inspection failures on Saturday. Each team had a crew member ejected and lost pit selection privileges for the Nascar Cup Series race at Las Vegas. The sanctioning body did not disclose what infractions were responsible for the penalties.

All three teams had their respective car chiefs ejected, including Robert Smith of the No. 4 team, Cody Sauls from the No. 21 team, and Tony Manzer of the No. 38 team.

The other two penalized teams were from the Chevrolet Racing camp, including the No. 9 Camaro of Chase Elliott, and the No. 77 Camaro of Josh Bilicxki. Both teams also had crew Members ejected and have also had their pit selection privileges revoked for Sunday’s racing event.

Christopher Bell, driver of the No. 20 Toyota Camry or Joe Gibbs Racing, will start on the pole for Sunday’s Nascar event at Last Vegas Motor Speedway, after posting a fastest lap of just over 29 seconds. Kyle Larson, winner of last week’s race at Auto Club Speedway and last year’s Las Vegas Cup Series race winner, will start beside Bell in second.

Daytona 500 winner Austin Cindric in the No. 2 Ford Mustang will start in third while the No. 14 Ford Mustang of Chase Briscoe will start beside him in fourth. Elliott qualified his Camaro in fifth, and will get to keep his starting position despite the penalties issued to his team. Harvick starts in the 25th position, Burton in 21st, and Gilliland 30th.

Sunday’s race marks the fourth racing event to feature the new Nascar Next Gen cars. Harvick says the first six weeks are critical to learning how to handle the all-new machine.

“We’re learning how to work on the car efficiently, at the track and at the shop, and that’s what I like about where we are as a group,” said Harvick. “Our group is filled with hardcore racers, and this first six weeks of racing is going to be really hardcore.”

  1. Matters not, the Fords were not competitive at all today. Plus, they accidentally took each other out in several on track accidents.

    1. Right?! That’s why I read the story. Not really “authoritative” is it?

    2. The violations were not disclosed by NASCAR.

  4. Aric Almirola appears to be the most consistent Mustang driver. The new gen Mustangs were nurfed before the season began at Daytona.

  5. It is why I choose not watch the Chervolet show any longer. Ford gets heavier pentalities. Cherolet just gets a slap on the hand. Elliot gets to keep starting position. Yup not surprised he won the Campion ship with a car that failed pre inspection 2 in last three races of his championship run. Not s fan anymore found something else to do.

    1. Yup, me too. I watch the highlights if I remember. But I really haven’t cared much about NASCAR since Johnson and his crew chief cheated so much and never really got penalties, and still (cheated to) win championship 😕.

  7. Nascar penalized the Ford teams before the season started by making them redo the front end because they had too much down force. It’s obvious now that they’ve handicapped them. I’m sure the bowtie babies cried hard enough to get nascrap to do something. I barely watch anymore. I used to be a die hard fan. Its obviously rigged.
