2022 Police Interceptor Utility Also Ditches Second Row Climate Controls

In recent months, Ford has removed certain features from a number of its models in an effort to speed up deliveries amid numerous supply chain constraints, including the semiconductor chip shortage. That includes the 2022 Ford Explorer, which is being shipped without its second-row climate controls temporarily, as Ford Authority reported last month. Now, the 2022 Police Interceptor Utility – which is based on the Explorer – will also ditch its second-row climate controls as well, sources familiar with the matter have told Ford Authority.

At this time, it’s unclear if the second-row climate control delete option is required for the 2022 Police Interceptor Utility to enter production. Right now, the Police Interceptor Utility can be ordered with the Rear Auxiliary Air Conditioning Without Controls option (order code 91F), which simply removes the controls. Like its civilian counterpart, those controls will be retrofitted at a later date.

As Ford Authority reported last month, FoMoCo plans on continuing to remove non-essential features from its vehicles in an effort to keep deliveries flowing as it battles supply chain issues. It’s currently unclear when the chip shortage might ease, though estimates range from several more months to 2024, so this strategy allows the automaker to continue producing vehicles rather than shutting down assembly lines entirely.

Meanwhile, the Police Interceptor Utility remains a popular option among law enforcement in a market that Ford has dominated for years now. Long on innovation, the crossover recently gained a heated sanitation solution to help combat the spread of COVID-19, and it also retained its title as the fastest cop car in America according to the most recent test data from the Michigan State Police.
