The Ford Authority Take

The Ford Mustang sales performance during Q1 2022 was constrained by ongoing supply shortages, including but not limited to the ongoing microchip shortage.

Since the 2022 Ford Mustang entered production at the Ford Flat Rock Assembly Plant  back in early January, the facility has been idled several times for a total of three weeks. As of this writing, current estimates put the chip shortage as lasting a minimum of six months starting in January 2022.

It is also worth noting that the Mustang will be overhauled for the 2024 model year. Code-named S650, the new model will represent the seventh generation of Ford’s pony. It’s expected to enter production in March 2023 for the 2024 model year, roughly a year later than previously expected.

It’s highly likely that Ford will sweeten its Mustang incentives for final units of the current model, enabling it to make room for the next-generation. To that end, we expect Mustang sales to continue to hold momentum in the near-term, as the nameplate continues to see healthy demand in light of tight supply.
