The 2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1 made its grand debut two years ago as a new variant that elevates the world’s best-selling sports car to new heights. With its unique suspension and modified 5.0L Coyote V8 engine making 480 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque (detuned slightly for the 2022 model year), the reborn Mach 1 delivers improved performance on the street and at the track. In fact, the Mach 1 recently served as the pace car for the Nascar Darlington 400 race, and Ford Authority has snagged several exclusive pictures of that very pony.
The pace car features several unique elements that differentiate it from its civilian counterpart, starting with added strobe lights within the round fog light openings in the upper front grille and on either side of the rear license plate. The roof-mounted light bar is present and accounted for, making this model stand out in metro Detroit traffic. The pace car is also adorned with several stickers including a massive Good Year 400 emblem on the doors.
It’s also worth noting that this 2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1 is equipped with both the Mach 1 Handling Package and Mach 1 Appearance Package. The Handling Package brings the unique 19-inch Tarnished Dark-Painted Aluminum wheels wrapped 305/30R19 front and 315/30R19 rear tires. In addition, the Handling Package incorporates a hard-to-miss performance rear spoiler with a Gurney Flap as well as front-wheel lip moulding and performance front aero splitter.
Meanwhile, the Mach 1 Appearance Package includes the iconic Fighter Jet Gray exterior color complemented by an Ebony interior with Orange accents and a unique front seatback color. This orange and black theme is continued throughout the car with orange brake calipers as well as orange and black stripes on the hood and sides.

As a bridge between the Mustang GT and Shelby GT500, the 2021 Ford Mustang Mach 1 brings distinct style and handling to the legendary pony. However, the real magic of the Mach lies in its distinct suspension system that featuring the latest MagneRide calibration, a stiffer steering intermediate shaft (I-shaft), new Electronic Power Assisted Steering (EPAS) calibration, as well as stiffer sway bars and front springs.
The pony car also includes a brake booster from the (now-discontinued) Mustang GT Performance Pack 2, a rear subframe with stiffer bushings, and a rear toe-link from the Shelby GT500. As such, the Mach 1 channels the nostalgia of its namesake, but with enhanced levels of power, performance and prestige.
In regard to the race that this Mustang Mach 1 paced, Joey Logano, driver of the No. 22 Nascar Ford Mustang took first place after a well placed bumper tap and extra lap put him ahead of William Byron’s No. 24 Chevy Camaro ZL1. The two engaged in an intense rivalry during the race, with Byron forcing Logano into the wall for a “Darlington stripe”. This led Logano to dish out a little payback as he made his successful pass for first place.
