Ford Patent Filed For Retractable Video Display System

Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a retractable video display system, Ford Authority has learned.

The patent was filed on November 16th, 2020, published on May 19th, 2022, and assigned serial number 0153134.

The Ford Authority Take

Back in August of 2019, Ford patented a projector system stored in the cargo area of an SUV or crossover, effectively transforming those types of vehicles into mobile movie theaters. Now, this new Ford patent aims to take that idea a step further, albeit with a screen built into the vehicle – no blank space required. The whole thing is built into the headliner of the vehicle, which means that it presumably won’t take away any precious cargo or passenger space, to boot.

When not in use, the video screen could stay stashed away out of sight and out of mind, and then when the time comes for some mobile TV or movie watching, the motorized screen could retract out for our viewing pleasure. The screen is stored in a horizontal position in the headliner, but when retracted, covers most of the rear cargo area, as we can see in the Ford patent drawings.

Ford pitches this idea not only as a way to relax and enjoy some outdoor TV or movies, but also as a method for displaying advertising for businesses, sharing documents, hosting presentations, or even holding video conferences. This idea is a bit more practical than utilizing a fixed screen as well, as it can be stored away when not in use, which means that it won’t interfere with cargo space or the driver’s outward vision.

Overall, this Ford patent is a pretty simple yet genius idea that has many potential uses, and it would make an interesting option on future models, whether for business or good old fashioned entertainment purposes.
