2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R Will Boast A Beefed-Up 10-Speed Automatic

Earlier this month, Ford Authority reported that despite some beliefs that the 2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R would utilize the same seven-speed dual clutch transmission present in the Ford Mustang Shelby GT500, it was unlikely that FoMoCo would pair that same gearbox with its supercharged Ford 5.2L V8 Predator engine in the muscular pickup. Instead, we believed that the 2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R will utilize Ford’s 10-speed automatic gearbox, a proven truck transmission that could be better suited for things like towing and hauling. Turns out, that’s precisely the case, as sources familiar with the matter have told Ford Authority that the Raptor R will indeed come equipped with FoMoCo’s 10-speed automatic.

As expected, the 10-speed utilized in the F-150 Raptor R has been beefed up to handle that truck’s extra power, too. Interestingly, Ford apparently benchmarked the fortified gearbox against the Chevy Camaro ZL1 – which comes equipped with the 10-speed as well, as it was co-developed between Ford and GM. Ford says that its latest version of the 10-speed gearbox is the quickest-shifting ever, even quicker than the Camaro ZL1, thanks to a new calibration with its Advanced Powertrain Control Software. It’s also notable that Ford Authority spies spotted Ford benchmarking a Camaro ZL1 earlier this month, too.

The Raptor R’s 10-speed has also been fitted with a new, 260mm torque converter with a heavy-duty turbine damper, as well as a heavy-duty rear output assembly featuring PTFE washers and a four-pinion gear carrier, all designed to help the gearbox handle the Raptor R’s 750 or so horsepower.

After Ford Authority was the first to report that V8 power would return to the F-150 Raptor back in June of 2019, numerous leaks have confirmed this fact, showing off that particular engine’s build sheet and the engine itself, while a host of window stickers recently revealed some of the pickup’s exterior color options, too. As Ford Authority reported earlier this month, order banks for the 2023 Ford F-150 Raptor R – which was developed under the code name “Carnivore”will open up right after its debut, expected to take place this coming fall.
