Ford Hybrids, F-150 PowerBoost Will Not Face Competition From GM

While General Motors has followed Ford’s large EV investment with one of its own in recent months, The Blue Oval’s cross-town rival isn’t planning on making any sort of proper Ford Bronco rival or Ford Maverick competitor, nor a suitable alternative to the high-performance off-road Ford F-150 Raptor pickup. However, one might assume that GM is cooking up a variety of electrified vehicles to compete with successful Ford hybrids such as the F-150 PowerBoost – which is proving attractive to owners of rival brands and winning awards, while also drawing considerable interest from prospective buyers. This success has prompted the automaker to continue producing Ford hybrids for the foreseeable future, but it seems as though GM won’t be competing with its chief rival in that space, according to the Detroit Free Press.

“GM has more than 25 years of electrification experience including with the plug-in vehicles like the Chevy Volt,” CEO Mary Barra said during the automaker’s annual shareholder’s meeting. “From that experience, our vision is for an all-electric future. Our strategy is focused on battery electric vehicles as they represent the best solution and advance our vision for an all-electric future.”

Unlike Ford and other automakers like Toyota, GM is skipping hybrids, for the most part, and moving right on to all-electric vehicles as it aims to electrify all four of its brands by 2035. It has some experience in that regard, having launched the Volt for the 2011 model year and then replacing it with the Bolt in 2019, though production of that model has been plagued by a recall after defective batteries caused several examples to catch fire.

Regardless, GM will move forward with its all-EV plan as Ford continues to sell hybrids at an unprecedented rate amid high customer demand, as it plans to produce 400,000 EVs in North America through next year and have the capacity to build one million by the end of 2025.

  1. Where can I find a comparison test between the two Maverick engines performing?

  2. To me Hybrids make more sense in that they provide the best solution to the challenge of long distance travel. My choice is the Maverick even though that option may be 8 months or so down the road for delivery. Just not enough charging stations across the country at this time.

  3. Yeah, GM should focus on making an EV that isn’t recalled every other day. Try that strategy.
