Ford Mustang family sales decreased in the United States while increasing in both Canada and Mexico during the first quarter of 2022.
Cumulative deliveries of the Ford Mustang family in the United States decreased 13 percent to 20,720 units in Q1 2022, comprised of:
- 13,986 units of the Ford Mustang, a decrease of 19 percent compared to 17,274 units sold in Q1 2021, and
- 6,734 units of the Mustang Mach-E, an increase of 2 percent compared to 6,614 units sold in Q1 2021
It’s highly likely that sales of the regular Mustang fell during the quarter due to very constrained availability as a result of negatively supply chain factors stemming from the COVID-19 pandemic. The same circumstance likely held back Mach-E sales.

Mustang Family Details
The Ford Mustang family is currently comprised of two distinct models: the “traditional” Mustang powered by gasoline internal combustion engines (ICE), available in a fastback-style two-door coupe and soft-top convertible body styles, and a mechanically distinct model called the Mustang Mach-E, a battery electric vehicle available only as a five-door crossover.
Riding on the Ford S550 platform, the ICE-powered Mustang is available in EcoBoost, GT, Mach 1, and Shelby GT500 sub-models. All of these models are built at the Ford Flat Rock plant in Michigan. The aforementioned submodels correlate to the pony car’s engine, with the lineup consisting of:
- Turbocharged 2.3L I4 EcoBoost – 310 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque, used in the EcoBoost models
- Turbocharged 2.3L I4 EcoBoost HO (high output) – 330 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque, used in the EcoBoost HPP Package
- Naturally-aspirated 5.0L V8 Coyote – 450 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque, used in Mustang GT models
- Naturally-aspirated 5.0L V8 Coyote – 470 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque, used in Mustang Mach 1 models
- Supercharged 5.2L V8 Predator – 760 horsepower and 625 pound-feet of torque, used exclusively in the Shelby GT500
Unlike the more prevalent Mustang range, the Mustang Mach-E rides on Ford’s GE1 platform, which was created specifically for the Mach-E for electric vehicles. The architecture traces its roots to the Ford C2 platform.
Manufactured at the Ford Cuautitlan Assembly Plant in Mexico, the Mach-E offers two battery options: the Standard Range Battery (70 kWh of usable energy and 247 estimated miles of range) and Extended Range Batter (91 kWh of usable energy and 303 estimated miles of range). The lineup consists of:
- Standard Range Battery (RWD models) – 266 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque, used in Select, Premium, and California Route 1 models
- Standard Range Battery (eAWD models) – 266 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque, used in Select, Premium, and California Route 1 models
- Extended Range Batter (RWD models) – 290 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque, used in Premium and California Route 1 models
- Extended Range Battery (eAWD models) – 346 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque, used in Premium and California Route 1 models
- Extended Range Battery (eAWD models) – 480 horsepower with 600 pound-feet of torque, exclusively used in the GT model
- Extended Range Battery (eAWD models) – 480 horsepower with 634 pound-feet of torque, exclusively used in the GT Performance Edition model

Ford … you did it again ! 3 times you’ve taken great smaller cars that were fairly easy to buy and maintain and created bloated beast. The Thunderbird once was a sporty and personal luxury car two door until about 1966 … then it became a bloated 4 door. And two times with the Ford Mustang. The Mustang began life as an affordable coupe, it became a too expensive to buy and drive 2 times. And you continue to do this, I’ve been driving Fords the better part of 20 years now and it pains me to see great vehicles go down this path. Ford high performance vehicles has to take a back seat to high MPG vehicles. Most reading this don’t know about the Mustang II, great cars, not exactly a performance vehicle but a two door that could be dressed up like a Mark V or it’s fact back V-6 cousin. As being from the generation who liked wire wheel covers, a more plush interior, and a quiet engine … bring it back. For those who don’t know look up a ’78 Mustang II, great little fuel efficient cars we really need back.
Sales are down because Ford is doing a terrible job of manufacturing, plain and simple. Sure there are supply issues affecting everyone, but Ford is being affected more than others. As a mustang lover who wants to go electric, I was excited to purchase the Mach E GT Performance, but as of May Ford announced they are no longer taking orders for any trim of the Mach E. I had to go ahead and purchase a Tesla Model Y Performance instead and that makes me quite upset. Also, Tesla sales are up from last year and they had to contend with two factories closed for extended periods of time. I love Ford but they really need to get their $hit together lest they lose more customers like myself.
I Love the MUSTANG! That Said….. Would ya Just BUILD MY F-150?? “PLEASE”??? “PLEASE”???
F ok rd and their dealers are l ok sing sales because the DD e as let’s are marking up the MSRP sticker price $20k to double the sticker price.
That what terrible leaders get you!!The new ford performance gt500 was underpowered!!Where was the 850hp version at?Where was the red eye charger type car from ford with 850p?ford is an EPIC FAIL right now with that and that ev crap!!
I own a 2005 Mustang and I love it! I wish I could afford a new Mustang but I’m sorry to say I can’t afford a new one. I’ve never had a new car my whole life and I’m in my 60’s. This is my 4th Mustang . I wouldn’t pay a dime for a plug in Mustang… Give me gas operated only! And Mustangs are supposed to be sleek, smooth, and drive like you stole ’em when you want/ need that extra power! As they say… ” If it’s not broken why fix it?!?!” C’mon Ford quit messing with these beautiful cars already!
Couldn’t possibly be that dealers are trying to sell 37k mustangs for 60k… or that they want 75k for the cheapest version of the mach-e that doesn’t suck.
Your just seeing Ford numbers in this site. The entire industry is in the tank. If you want to pay MSRP, then order directly through the manufacturer and be willing to wait. The reason is given for the inventory shortages is a chip issue. My reason is because the current administration is pressuring the auto industry to reduce Ice vehicles and increase development in the EV sector. Stop to think. Before this administration the government fleet EPA mpg had been lowered to 28. Now it has been increased to 40 mpg by 2026. Gas prices are at record highs. Avg. New car price current exceeds $47,000. The only way to obtain the governments 40 mpg fleet 40 number is with EV models. That’s why any dealer lots are currently stocking roughly 20% of the inventory they previously stocked. Now the push is on for home solar panels. Currently fossil fuels are on the chopping block.
