Ford Patent Filed For EV Charging Station Guidance System

Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for an EV charging station guidance system, Ford Authority has learned.

The patent was filed on December 9th, 2020, published on June 9th, 2022, and assigned serial number 0176839.

The Ford Authority Take

As it continues to shift toward EVs, Ford also continues to file a number of EV charging-related patents, too. In recent months, those include a portable high-voltage EV charging system and a hands-free charging system, as well as a next-gen charging cable that could vastly reduce charging times. With infrastructure and charging times routinely ranking as some of the top concerns among those skeptical of making the switch to an all-electric vehicle, this new patent aims to making accessing a charger much easier, at the very least.

This new Ford patent depicts a system that contains a transceiver configured to communicate information to a vehicle and guide it to an acceptable parking position so that the charging cable can easily reach the charging port. Even better, the vehicle would be able to use this information to autonomously park itself in a charging station in a position that would ensure it can be charged, as well as not block other charging spots.

While it may sound a bit unnecessary, it’s worth noting that EVs have charge ports located in all sorts of places, whether that be the front or rear sides, or even the front grille. With traffic at charging stations ramping up quickly with more and more EVs on the road, efficiency is of the utmost importance, and it seems as if this patent is aiming to make the charging experience just a bit more so.
