Ford has indicated it is taking steps to stay ahead of the competition in terms of product quality, and it’s certainly paying off. Yesterday, Ford Authority reported that The Blue Oval brand ranked above average in the 2022 U.S. Initial Quality study, and Lincoln has followed suit. The luxury division ranked below average last year, but now, it seems that things have changed somewhat, because while Lincoln vehicles had more problems when compared to 2021, its chief rivals suffered from an even greater number of issues.
The J.D. Power U.S. Initial Quality Study surveyed 84,165 purchasers and lessees of a 2022 model year vehicle in the early stages of ownership, gathering responses between February and May 2022. The data indicated that owners have been experiencing more problems with their vehicles this year than in previous years. In fact, this year’s reports were the worst in the study’s 36-year history, with problems per 100 vehicles increasing from 162 in 2021 to 180 in 2022, a change blamed on pandemic related disruptions and the ongoing supply chain deficits.
Lincoln ranked above average, with an average of 167 problems per 100 vehicles reported. Last year, 163 problems per 100 vehicle were reported by owners, so this year’s data indicates four more problems than the previous study. However, it still outpaced key rivals like Mercedes-Benz (189) and Infiniti (204), while trailing behind Lexus (157), Cadillac (163), and Genesis (156), the top ranked luxury brand in this year’s study.
This latest report on Lincoln quality doesn’t exactly mesh up with what other publications have published on the issue. As Ford Authority previously reported, the luxury division ranked dead last in the annual Consumer Reports reliability survey, which asks owners about issues experienced by new and slightly older vehicles. That said, J.D. Power data previously indicated that some modern products, particular the 2021 Lincoln Corsair, is among the top compact luxury crossovers with the highest initial quality.
