Ford has long had a stranglehold on the police vehicle market, selling more of those types of vehicles than any other automaker for over a decade. The Police Interceptor Utility has become incredibly popular among law enforcement and is still holding its own in that heated segment, but a one-off upfitted Ford Mustang Mach-E recently sparked some interest among certain departments around the globe, making it seem as if an all-electric police vehicle is inevitable. Now, the 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning Pro SSV (Special Service Vehicle) has debuted as exactly that – an EV pickup designed specifically for duty.
The 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning Pro SSV is the world’s first EV pickup purpose built for law enforcement, and its available with either the standard or extended range battery, which offer outputs of 452 horsepower and 775 pound-feet of torque for the former, as well as 580 horsepower and 775 pound-feet of torque with the latter – identical numbers to its civilian counterpart. Payload comes in as high as 2,235 pounds, while the Lightning Pro SSV can tow up to 10,000 pounds when properly configured.
What differentiates the Lightning Pro SSV from its production counterpart are a host of unique features that include police-grade heavy-duty cloth seats with reduced bolsters to help holstered officers enter and exit the vehicle more easily, built-in steel intrusion plates in the front seatbacks, available red/blue or amber/white roof-mounted LED warning beacons, an upfit-friendly reinforced instrument panel top tray for easy mounting of police equipment, and easy-to-clean vinyl rear seats and vinyl flooring.
Otherwise, the 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning Pro SSV is essentially identical to the regular F-150 Lightning Pro, right down to its 12-inch infotainment screen and instrument cluster display. Ford isn’t talking range just yet, but will reveal that information, along with pricing, latter this summer.
“We’re proud to offer America’s first electric police pickup truck to local government customers who can use the truck’s game-changing technology to help improve their productivity,” said Nate Oscarson, Ford Pro national government sales manager. “Pro Power Onboard can serve as a mobile power source to light up evening accident scenes on the highway, the electric powertrain helps to potentially reduce costs associated with fuel and scheduled maintenance needs, and the Mega Power Frunk provides extra lockable storage on top of purpose-built police additions our customers have come to expect from the leader in police vehicles.”
