Ford E-Transit Gets Cheaper In Canada Thanks To New iMHZEV Program

The Ford E-Transit has launched in a number of geographical areas across the globe in recent months, including the U.S., Europe, and Mexico. In America, the EV van quickly took over its segment in terms of sales from the first month it was available, and has since remained atop the sales charts. In the U.S., the Ford E-Transit is eligible for a $7,500 federal tax credit, with some states also offering additional financial benefits for customers. Now, E-Transit buyers in Canada are eligible for a bit of a discount on the EV van thanks to the country’s new Incentives for Medium- and Heavy-duty Zero-Emission Vehicles (iMHZEV) program.

The new program gives businesses the opportunity to receive an incentive for leasing or purchasing a new medium- heavy-duty zero-emission vehicle, which vary depending on the lease term or purchase agreement. All Ford E-Transit models are currently eligible for this point-of-sale incentive, which comes in at $2,500 for a 12-month lease, $5,000 for a 24-month lease, $7,500 for a 36-month lease, or $10,000 for a 48-month lease or purchase.

The purpose of the iMHZEV program is to help compensate for the higher upfront purchase costs of an EV, while also encouraging businesses to make the switch to clean energy. To meet the program requirements, a model must be a medium or heavy-duty vehicle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) of more than 8,500 pounds and includes class 2B to class 8 vehicles, including on-road vocational vehicles falling in classes such as refuse trucks or yard/shunt trucks.

The amount of the incentive varies based on the class of vehicle, with the E-Transit falling into the lowest eligible category of class 2B. Incentives of up to $200,000 are available for heavier vehicles, topping out with class 7 and 8, which have a GVWR of over 26,001 pounds. However, businesses can only receive up to 10 of these incentives or a maximum of $1,000,000 in a given calendar year.
