The Ford F-150 has long been one of the most popular vehicles in the U.S. from a sales perspective, and routinely ranks as one of the most considered pickups on the market as well. In fact, the F-150 has the highest market share of all U.S. vehicles currently in operation, and was also the fourth-most leased vehicle in the fourth quarter of 2021. That latter trend continued in the first quarter of 2022, as the Ford F-150 remains one of the top ten most leased vehicles on the market, according to new data from Experian.
This time around, the Ford F-150 ranked as the second most-leased vehicle in Q1 of this year, representing 2.17 percent of the total U.S. lease market. That ranks it behind only the Honda Civic at 2.25 percent, as well as ahead of the Chevy Equinox (2.03 percent), Honda CR-V (2.03 percent), Ram 1500 (1.82 percent), Toyota RAV4 (1.78 percent), Mazda CX-5 (1.77 percent), Honda HR-V (1.74 percent), Jeep Wrangler Unlimited (1.61 percent), and Ford Escape (1.60 percent).
As is evident from this list, consumers continue to prefer crossovers, SUVs, and pickups when it comes to the type of vehicle they like to lease, and this is also true of financing. According to Experian, crossovers and SUVs alone made up 60.38 percent of total vehicle financing in Q1 of 2022, which is up from 58.95 percent in Q1 2021. As new vehicle prices and interest rates increase, the gap between financing and lease payments is widening as well – to $126, on average, in the first quarter.
Regardless, the affordable Civic was the only sedan that made the top ten list of most leased vehicles in Q1, and was joined by a host of lower-priced crossovers such as the HR-V, CR-V, Equinox, RAV4, CX-5, and Escape. According to Experian, much of this can be attributed to the large difference between lease and finance payments for these models, with the former coming in at $100+ less than the latter in most cases.
