Maverick Lightning Trademark Filing Suggests Pickup Headed To Europe

Ford Motor Company has filed to trademark “Maverick Lightning” with the European Union Intellectual Property Office (EUIPO), Ford Authority has learned.

Filed on July 11th, 2022, under serial number 018731684, this application contains the goods and services description of “motor vehicles, namely, automobiles, pickup trucks, electric vehicles in the nature of automobiles, pickup trucks, sport utility vehicles, and their structural parts.”

The Ford Authority Take

Like Ford’s recent trademark filing for “Ranger Lightning” that was also filed at the same time in Europe, as Ford Authority reported earlier today, it appears that this filing for “Maverick Lightning” indicates that the automaker is considering an all-electric version of the Ford Maverick, and that both it and the Ford Ranger EV could carry the same Lightning moniker as the existing Ford F-150 Lightning. What’s particularly interesting about this trademark filing is the fact that last June, Ford said that it would not be selling the Maverick in Europe, however.

Regardless, the Maverick is already offered in base hybrid form as a super-efficient electrified compact pickup that has proven to be a massive hit for The Blue Oval since its launch. That model is currently only offered in front-wheel drive configuration, but Ford Authority spies recently spotted a possible all-wheel drive hybrid variant out testing. As Ford Authority reported in March, the Maverick is now considered one of Ford’s “Icons,” which means that more variants and an EV version are likely on the way.

An all-electric version of the Ford Maverick seems almost like a foregone conclusion at this point, however, particularly as Ford transitions toward a fully electrified lineup. In Europe, the automaker plans to convert its entire passenger vehicle lineup to EVs by 2030 or sooner after launching seven new models by 2024, though FoMoCo hasn’t yet set a date on when it expects to complete that transition in North America.

When will the Ford Maverick start production this year? If the fully electrified Maverick starts possible production in Europe, will the hybrid engine be discontinued in the U.S.?

It sure seems more and more that Ford is headed into a “Global” availability of this truck. For whatever it’s worth, I really want to purchase one, but my local dealer is adding 8,000 additional monies onto MSRP….. the whole scene looks confusing….
