The Ford Authority Take
Over the past several months, Ford has filed a host of patents related to vehicle interiors, including one for a wet seat detection and mitigation system, a seat assembly with a pivotable armrest and airbag, a seat assembly with a liquid sanitizer system, a fully automatic seat positioning system, an energy absorbing seat, a full seatback airbag system, and a seat bottom mounted airbag that protects pets. Now that trend continues with this new Ford patent outlining an idea for interchangeable seat cushions.
This particular Ford patent is seemingly aimed at customers that want to change out seat cushions for comfort’s sake, an intriguing idea, particularly for those that don’t find a set of seats comfortable or perhaps even just want to replace worn out cushions with new ones. Additionally, customers would presumably be able to customize their seats by swapping out cushions, changing colors or other design features quickly and easily.
The patent outlines the design of a seat that would allow users to do such things, with a base that consists of multiple racks that are spaced apart and specifically designed to hold a portion of the seat. Overall, it’s certainly an interesting idea that would have quite a few real-world uses. Interchangeable seat cushions could also prove to be a boon for customers that may love their vehicle aside from its seat comfort, and extra adjustability in that regard is always welcome.
