For the sake of presenting a more complete picture of the competitive landscape, we are also providing sales figures for the Lexus RX below. The RX is a premium midsize CUV that slots into the luxury utility D segment to compete with the Lincoln Nautilus. However, the RX is now offered in a three-row variant called RXL, which competes with the three-row luxury models mentioned above. Since Lexus does not break out sales of the two-row RX from those of the three-row RXL, not all RX sales can be applied to the premium three-row CUV segment. Instead, a more apt comparison would be to bundle Lincoln Nautilus and Aviator and set them against the RX family. We’re also including Cadillac XT5 and Cadillac XT6 sales, which are direct rivals to the Nautilus and Aviator, respectively.

Sales Numbers - Lexus RX & RXL - Q2 2022 - USA

TOTAL -10.80% 51,963 58,252 -13.19% 97,587 112,414

Combining the Aviator and Nautilus nets Lincoln 12,749 deliveries, less than half of the 26,974 sales recorded by the Lexus RX family. Meanwhile, Cadillac had 12,240 combined deliveries of the XT5 and XT6.

The Ford Authority Take

The increase in Lincoln Aviator sales during Q2 2022 is a nice change of pace for the luxury crossover considering the ongoing supply chain constraints faced by FoMoCo and the auto industry at large. Automobile production has been heavily impacted during the past two years, resulting in substantial production cuts that then translated to near record-low inventories, record-low incentives, and record-high new vehicle prices.

As such, we imagine that the uptick experienced during Q2 is the result of chips and other supplies having become more readily available to produce the Aviator, or finish producing models that were built incompletely.

It is worth noting that the Aviator has been a solid performer for both customers and the FoMoCo since the launch of the second-generation model for the 2020 model year, as the luxury crossover has earned a variety of awards including the best resale value within its segment.

  1. This ride should be outselling the competition. This SUV is sexy. I’m not one to drive a “soccer mom” car but this one. Oh hell yeah I would. Now just leave it alone. Like my dad always said, if it works, don’t fix it.

  2. Saw the headline and thought wow “the Aviator is killing it ” only to find out it worked its way to the middle of the pack from I guess the bottom.
I honestly can’t believe the numbers are so low. 1/5 of the Lexus RX, 1/3 of the X5
What the hell are they doing? Hyundai premium brand will soon outsell it.
