Ford Motor Company China Sales Down 11 Percent In Q3 2022

Ford Motor Company China sales decreased 11 percent to 133,000 units during the third quarter of 2022. The automaker offers its two core brands – Ford and Lincoln – in the Asian country, as well as a China-specific brand called JMC as part of the Jiangling-Ford joint venture.

“Ford is paving the way for growth in China by differentiating our brand through customer experience in the vehicle purchasing and ownership process, including distributing EVs directly to customers,” said President and CEO of Ford China, Anning Chen, in a statement. “Further transforming our business in China was the establishment of Ford Model e Technology, a standalone entity with dedicated resources to help chart Ford’s EV future in the world’s largest car market and deliver future growth via the Ford+ plan,” he added.

FoMoCo China Sales Notes – Q3 2022

FoMoCo does not provide a breakout of individual model performance in China, but we do have the following information:

Ford passenger vehicle sales decreased 12 percent to 54,400 units during the third quarter:

  • Ford’s best-selling model in China is the Escort compact sedan
  • Sales of Ford brand utilities surpassed 32,700 units, up 3 percent year-over-year and 27 percent quarter-over-quarter
  • Ford’s utility portfolio was further updated in the third quarter with the launch of the refreshed Ford Explorer last month
    • The new model received more than 5,000 customer orders within two days of its launch on September 6th
  • Sales of the Mondeo flagship sedan exceeded 14,100 units, up 50 percent year-over-year
  • Sales of the recently-launched Equator Sport surpassed 7,500 units, and exported 16,000 units to other markets on rising demand
  • These figures do not include Ford Transit, which are included in JMC sales (below)

Lincoln sales flat to 23,800 units units during the third quarter

  • Similar to Ford brand vehicle sales, Lincoln’s sales performance during the quarter was driven by strong demand for utilities
  • The Lincoln Corsair sold more than 11,000 units and is the brand’s best-selling vehicle for 29 consecutive months
  • Zephyr, Lincoln’s first locally-produced flagship sedan, sold approximately 5,500 units

JMC sales during the third quarter were not shared

  • This brand includes light truck, pickups and commercial vans
  • The Ford Transit commercial van is sold under this market-specific brand
  • FoMoCo did not share any sales figures for the brand in the third quarter
