NYC Orders 300 Ford E-Transit Cargo Vans Amid EV Pivot

New York City is in the midst of a major electrification pivot and is investing $420 million to convert its entire fleet to EVs by 2035. The city has already purchased a number of Ford Mustang Mach-E crossovers, with plans to acquire many more over the coming years. Now, New York City has placed an order for 300 units of the best-selling and award-winning Ford E-Transit as well, which is proving to be quite popular among all sorts of commercial fleets.

This Ford E-Transit cargo van order- which is the largest medium-duty purchase of electric vehicles for the NYC fleet to date – is expected to arrive in the city this winter, along with a single Ford F-150 Lightning that has also been ordered. Those units will join a fleet that already consists of 4,000 EVs. NYC’s total fleet is expected to surpass the 4,500 mark as soon as June of 2023 – far beyond its goal of operating a 4,000 EV fleet by 2025.

While it won’t be able to completely transition every one of its 30,000 fleet vehicles to electric power in the coming years, New York City officials are also exploring the use of alternative fuels including renewable diesel, which feature lower tailpipe emissions than regular fuels and can be used in heavier-duty vehicles for the time being.

This process has already begun as the NYC Department of Citywide Administrative Services (DCAS) is in the process of replacing at least 1,250 of its ICE-powered vehicles with EVs and installing at least 1,776 fast electric vehicle chargers – around 100 of which will be open to the public. The city also plans to purchase 180 portable mobile electric vehicle chargers and solar carports, which can serve as power backup charging stations for electric vehicles in the event of a power outage.

We’ll have more on the E-Transit soon, so be sure and subscribe to Ford Authority for the latest Ford Transit news and non-stop Ford news coverage.

Brett's lost track of all the Fords he's owned over the years and how much he's spent modifying them, but his current money pits include an S550 Mustang and 13th gen F-150.

NYC should be receiving the last of the 300 just in time for their newly proclaimed no ICE mandate in 2035. Hopefully they’ll have 300 chargers to hook them up to.
