Ford Bronco Sales Surpass 4Runner, Narrow Gap With Wrangler During Q4 2022

Ford Bronco sales increased in the United States while decreasing in Canada and Mexico during the fourth quarter of 2022.

In the United States, Ford Bronco deliveries totaled 30,670 units in Q4 2022, an increase of about 24 percent compared to 24,819 units sold in Q4 2021.

During the complete 2022 calendar year, Bronco sales increased about 234 percent to 117,057 units.

Ford Bronco Sales - Q4 2022 - Canada

In Canada, Ford Bronco deliveries totaled 1,908 units in Q4 2022, a decrease of about 30 percent compared to 2,739 units sold in Q4 2021.

During the complete 2022 calendar year, Bronco sales increased about 139 percent to 10,167 units.

In Mexico, Ford Bronco deliveries totaled 421 units in Q4 2022, a decrease of about 43 percent compared to 733 units sold in Q4 2021.

During the complete 2022 calendar year, Bronco sales increased about 128 percent to 1,682 units.

Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)

A not-insignificant 24 percent jump in Ford Bronco sales totaled 30,670 units, enough for the off-road SUV to capture second place in its segment in terms of sales volume. First place was maintained by the Jeep Wrangler, which saw sales decline 14 percent to 34,253 units, as the Bronco narrowed the gap, now being less than 4K units behind the Wrangler. The Toyota 4Runner brought up third place with a 30 percent decrease in sales to 30,670 units.

From a segment share standpoint, the Wrangler accounted for a leading 37 percent share, down one percentage point from the year ago quarter. The Bronco accounted for 33 percent share, up nine percentage points year-over-year, while the 4Runner saw 30 percent share, down eight percentage points.

The midsize off-road Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) segment contracted 11 percent to 92,527 units during Q4 2022, meaning Ford Bronco sales significantly outperformed the segment average.

The Ford Authority Take

The Bronco outsold the 4Runner for the second consecutive quarter, solidifying its second-place position while eating into the Wrangler’s leading volume and share. With that in mind, a solid portion of Ford Bronco sales were to prior reservation/order holders, indicating that the Bronco could sell even more if dealers had more vehicles available in inventory (and on the lot) to sell. In fact, Ford elected to restrict 2023 Bronco orders to existing reservation or order holders to ensure that these are fully honored.

Looking ahead, we expect Ford Bronco sales to continue to expand, limited only by the ability of the Ford Michigan Assembly plant to produce the vehicle. The facility is currently prioritizing Bronco production at the expense of the Ford Ranger, which is the other vehicle made at the plant.

  • It's hard to believe Ford can barely overtake the 8-year-old 4runner platform with their freshly designed and much hyped Bronco. I'd wager there are a significant number of loyal 4runner owners waiting for the inevitable 4runner redesign coming soon.

    • I think it comes down to production availability not the product itself.
      As you said, the Toyota is old, R&D already recouped, henceforth discount in the form of rebate offered by mfg gives 4Runner price advantage plus availability is a win for Toyota.

  • The ToyRunner is less expensive than the bronco - bronco sells even with commodity pricing of $5k plus. Barring any major recalls, once production isn’t subject to commodity issues, the Bronco will out sell all. GM in the wings. GM bringing back the El Camino name or Nomad on their bronco competitor.
