From a segment share standpoint, Ford F-Series accounted for a segment-best 35 percent share, down two percentage points compared to Q4 2021. The Silverado posted 26 percent share, up four percentage points, while the Ram earned 20 percent share, down six percentage points. The Silverado’s corporate cousin, the Sierra, posted a segment share of 13 percent, up two percentage points, while the Tundra earned six percent, up three percentage points. Finally, the Titan’s share was essentially nil, down one percentage point.

The full-size pickup truck segment contracted three percent to 538,535 units during Q4 2022, meaning that F-Series sales underperformed the segment average.

It’s worth noting that adding up Q4 2022 sales of General Motors’ two trucks – the Silverado and Sierra – results in 214,327 combined deliveries, knocking the F-Series from the top spot by a 27,677 units and earning 40 percent segment share.

The Ford Authority Take

Not even the extremely popular Ford F-150 and Ford Super Duty pickups have been safe from the hardships brought about by ongoing supplier issues and other constraints. The result was clearly seen during Q4, as F-Series was in the red, losing two percentage points in segment share as cross-town rival, GM, saw very healthy growth in Silverado and Sierra sales.

Nevertheless, the F-Series retained its position as best-selling pickup nameplate for the 2022 calendar year, though it’s worth noting that combined sales of the Silverado and Sierra ranges results in 764,771 cumulative deliveries, over 100K units higher than the 653,957 units recorded by the F-Series.

2023 Ford Super Duty

The addition of the refreshed 2023 Super Duty line will certainly have a positive effect on Ford F-Series sales throughout the year, so long as production keeps up with demand. In fact, order banks took in 50,000 orders in the first week they were open – a number that grew to 150,000 by the end of November, indicating that the heavy duty pickup is in very high demand.
