Competitive Sales Comparison (USA)
Ford Maverick sales skyrocketed 77 percent during Q4 2022, selling 22,568 units and maintaining its first-place standing. Its only competitor in the compact pickup space, the Hyundai Santa Cruz, could not hold a candle to the Maverick, selling 9,677 units and experiencing a 37 percent increase.

From a segment share standpoint, Ford Maverick sales dominated with 70 percent segment share, while the Santa Cruz only commanded 30 percent.
The compact pickup segment increased 63 percent to 32,245 units, meaning Ford Maverick sales outperformed the segment average.
For the sake of context, below, we’ve provided sales data for midsize pickup trucks. While these pickups technically slot in at one segment above the Maverick, there is often cross-shopping between the two segments.

TOTAL | -4.10% | 136,590 | 142,434 | -4.95% | 565,382 | 594,813 |
The midsize mainstream pickup segment contracted four percent during the fourth quarter of 2022, posting 136,590 sales. Of that, the Ford Ranger accounted for 10,712 sales, severely underperforming the Maverick. However, it’s worth noting that Ranger availability is currently very likely constrained as FoMoCo has probably elected to limit production of the truck at the Michigan Assembly plant in order to facilitate higher production numbers of the Ford Bronco.
The Ford Authority Take
Sales figures for the Ford Maverick continue to prove that The Blue Oval’s compact pickup is highly desirable, outselling its only competitor in its segment by more than double, and also dominating its big brother, the Ranger. In fact, the automaker is adding a third shift at the Hermosillo Assembly plant in Mexico in July 2023 to facilitate increased production of the Maverick in response to its high demand. It should be noted that Maverick sales began in late 2021, another reason why it posted such a drastic increase.
Ford’s crosstown rival, General Motors, has certainly taken notice of the Maverick’s popularity. As recently reported by Ford Authority, a Maverick is in the hands of The General, likely for benchmarking purposes.
The 2023 model year brought minor changes and updates to the Maverick. Perhaps the most notable addition was that of the Tremor Off-Road Package, which adds quite a few off-road-ready mechanical and equipment upgrades to the truck right off the showroom floor. The Tremor Package will likely continue to drive demand for the already highly sought-after pickup, making it one of the most coveted vehicles on the market.

More interested in production than sales. Like where’s my truck.
Ordered xl 10-11-2021. I think it’s a bare and switch . I have had 8-10 come in just like ordered. Same matured cost but was told other customer turn theirs down.and the price was double. Still waiting no build date. Fordauthoriity could talk about that.
NO KIDDING WE have been waiting 16 months now, nothing in my driveway ? reordered 2023 sept 15/22 conformation from ford, but thats it.
last wed bought a santa cruz SE ,may keep it instead?? love it so far.
I’m of the same mindset as you are, Bill. Ordered 2023 the first day of of order opening in September. Received confirmation from Ford, as well as a couple apologetic emails about delays, etc. As my Maverick is a Lariat Hybrid with Lux, full Copilot 360 and Black Appearance Package, I’m not ever expecting delivery, mainly due to the hybrid engine allocations. I also bought a new Santa Cruz SE in October 2022 at under MSRP, love it so far. As I’ve said before, the first manufacturer that puts a compact unibody pick-up in my hands, gets my money.
That’s too bad but your choice! I wouldn’t have settled. It’s not Fords fault ..the capacity constraints currently.. due to very high vehicle demand. They built a great product.. isnt that the whole idea? Demand will settle dwn in a few yrs. Ford is king of trucks for very good reason ! 💯
I find it interesting that there all sorts of F150’s and Bronco Sports available to buy on the dealer lots.
Are the chips in those vehicles different than what is in the maverick? If so why? Do they not understand that the more parts that are universal will improve delivery performance and actually reduce costs for the company?
The market for the Bronco Sport seems to be saturated and those vehicles are not selling. Why is Ford pushing Bronco Sports off the line right now instead of Mavericks?
Why is Ford finishing putting on a second in July instead of last July when the company became overwhelmed with orders?
Having once worked in a subsidiary of Ford I can attest to the fact that Ford is notorious for waiting to the cows are out and running down the road before the gates are closed
I have order my Maverick and I can’t even get to sit in one yet to see if my 6 ft 4 frame is comfortable in it.
This all very frustrating. Unfortunately if I can’t get a Maverick before I die of old age I have no idea what plan B will be.
Well its doesn’t compare at all to Maverick as everyone knows & i highly doubt you waited that long ..as only 1st edition Mavericks took longest. Your trolling. Build the best products & they will sell! Maverick plant working 6days/wk – 3 shifts. I’m waiting on ’23 Ranger Tremor will prob take 12-14wks. I can wait for the vehicle i really want! Had a ’19 Ranger XLT FX4 for 4yrs ..was impeccable. Great truck. Gave to my son hence ordering the new ’23 Ranger . Many other automakers would love to have Fords problem of vehicles in high demand !
It was my understanding that Mav 3rd shift J1 is mid 2023.
I got a Vin # and date of production week of Feb
22,2023. So will see how that goes.?? Trying to be.optimistic.
I had to wait 6 months great truck though tow my landscaping trailer with it sometimes the thing handles and has more power then my V8 F150.
1st edition orders were longest wait. There is no good substitute for the new Maverick out there. Wise choice! Enjoy it. Will serve ya very well. Waiting on ’23 Ranger XLT Tremor right now. My ’19 Ranger XLT FX4 has been flawless. Gave to my son. 💯
Stick w/it Suzanne they are doing the very best they can in the current environment. Paying more for parts needed (suppliers adding shifts at facilities etc) to get these vehicles to customers! Demand is so high on Maverick..& Ranger. Ordered ’23 Ranger XLT Tremor Jan 13th. I figure 12-16wks as Bronco orders are taking priority (built @MAP in Michigan). My dealer said there are no new Rangers w/in 150mi radius . They can sell every Ranger they get within days. Many ppl on cancelation lists (from orig order holders) for those vehicles as well.
Be patient Suzanne … I ordered my Maverick Lariat HYBRID fully loaded in July 2021, got my Vin # & date of production (which moved
2X) in Feb 2022 and took delivery April 2022 … I couldn’t be happier.
I consider it my Mini-F150-Roadster, which it replaced, since it is so light (3,600lbs+rear Tonneau cover) and scoots up hills, passing the big guy trucks. All I do is top it off when it’s down a quarter of the 13+ gallon tank, and my gas bill is practically non-existent, since breaking frequently fully regenerates the battery and typical usage runs 32-40mpg around town.Hang in there, you won’t be disappointed.
I sure am a happy camper!
I totally understand, mine has bee ordered for 15 months and Ford tells me that it has bee built and has shipped. We’ll see good luck with yours.
Be patient its well worth the wait. My neighbor has ’22 Maverick XLT FX4 he raves bout (hybrid 2wd is good too). Im waiting on a ’23 XLT Ranger Tremor myself. Plant it’s built in (MAP) along w/ Bronco has indeed prioritized Bronco orders over Ranger.. understandably . Heard from dealers they cut Ranger production 50%. There are no new Rangers on dealer lots within 150mi radius of me! Dealers say they can sell EVERY Ranger they get there hands on its in very high demand. Ford has a very “good” problem on its hands having literally 4-5 model vehicles that are sold out right now. Seen whole row of Hyundai Cruz on local dealer lot nearby. Ugly an in no way compares to Maverick capabilities/design/features/strength .
I ordered a bare bones XL hybrid in late Sept. 2021 and they shipped my 2023 re-order yesterday. It will take more than a month to be delivered to NY so I will believe it when it gets here! They OEM accessories got here in less than a week. I do like the Atlas Blue more than the Velocity Blue though. LOL
Good on gas, extremely useful, great price, zero competition. Anyone shocked or sells like crazy?
Well said. Demand has been so far above expectations. It’s an amazing small truck esp w/ Gen2 TGDI powertrain/ FX4 configuration. Will sell well for yrs to come. Waiting on ’23 Ranger XLT Tremor ordered Jan13th. Had ’19 Ranger XLT FX4 for 4yrs that was impeccable. Gave to my son. I figure 12-16wks as Bronco orders from the MAP facility taking priority.. understandably. I can wait for the best midsized truck out there. Other automakers would love to have Fords problem of so many vehicles in high demand.
Too bad the build of the Maverick is close to the number of those sold. Ordered a 2022 and in September got an email that my order was approved and converted to a 2023 and that I would get another email when it was in the queue, and then when to anticipate delivery.
Two subsequent emails (latest on 12/20/22) indicating supply chain issues…still.
You will get it sir. Based on customer feedback it will be well worth the wait! There’s no comparable substitutes out there. It’s an amazing small truck. My ’19 Ranger XLT FX4 has been so good i just ordered a ’23 Ranger XLT Tremor Jan13th. Expecting 16wks+ as MAP facility builds the Bronco also . All these vehicles are in very high demand & Ford is paying alot extra for its suppliers to produce extra parts was told. They literally have 4-5 vehicles that are sold out ..not to mention sub models of F150 (Raptor & Tremor) .
Placed my order for the XL hybrid on 9/17/2022, maybe another 6 months before I get my truck!
At least you were able to order one and have some hope of getting it.
Why can’t you order one sir? The Ranger is excellent as well..have a ’19 Ranger XLT FX4 that’s been impeccable. Drove it 4yrs before giving to my son..best all around truck ive ever owned & ive had Tacomas , S-10s, 1/2 tons etc. Just ordered ’23 Ranger XLT Tremor mid Jan. Possibly ordering a new Ranger to your specs would get you a great new truck sooner?
I ordered my XL a year before you did in Sept. 2021 and it shipped yesterday. Long wait!
It should be painfully obvious by now that in the current environment most manufacturers have taken the profits first approach to vehicle sales. They can’t, or won’t, build enough vehicles to meet the demand, especially when it comes to the most desirable models like the Maverick. That is not by accident. There is no doubt some of that is due to parts shortages but they are also not about to build more vehicles than they believe they can sell. All of that leads to higher prices and therefore higher profits. It’s called supply and demand.
Yep. Dealer lots and deals will never return to the way they used to be. I bought my brand new F150 off a lot in 2020. $15k off msrp and 100k mile powertrain warranty included at no extra charge. (Before the Covid bomb hit) Dealer must’ve had 3-400 F-Series alone in stock. Now they have 60 new cars total. Sometimes they’ll dip a high trim explorer or f150 to just below msrp but that’s it. Super duties and broncos are msrp but you have to order one as they simply can’t (won’t) stock them. It’s Insane
Ford won’t let dealers just have the huge inventories of pre-covid due to supply chain constraints every automaker is dealing w/. Your hearing about it mostly w/ Ford because they have the most high demand models last 2yrs. Currently all dealers must have an actual buyer (dealer took my license info) to place orders. Thus in theory actual customers get 1st dibs on vehicles being built etc. Waiting on ’23 Ranger XLT Tremor ordered Jan13th. Same plant builds Bronco .. so i know it will be longer than usual. It will be worth the wait to get exactly what i want though. Gave my ’19 Ranger XLT FX4 to my son..was impeccable over 4yrs. Just a terrific all around truck !
CHEAP/decent sells. What’s the mystery?
It’s very well built & has excellent capabilities for its size. There’s a new Tremor edition as well. Very cool . I prefer Ranger myself an my ’19 Ranger XLT FX4 has far exceeded my expectations for midsized truck. Ford knows trucks.
They could sell a lot more Maverick’s if they would open taking orders again. I want one so bad, but I can’t order it. Come On, FMC!!
They can’t open up the order bank again because they already of more orders than they can build. Almost half of the hybrid orders will not be produced for 2023. Can sell more if you can’t build more.
Hahahahaha really??? Ford has already taken tens of thousands of orders they can’t possibly produce and you think by “taking more orders” they could sell more – wow.
If you are willing to wait 15+ months…
It’s not that long now. They just have alot of very popular models. That’s a good position to be in. Ford is pushing its suppliers as far as it can ..spending tons of $ to help enable them to build more parts!
They are at full capacity @plant building Mavericks.. 3- shifts/6-7 days p/wk! They are trying to get these trucks..as well as Broncos & Rangers to waiting customers. They’re spending far more than usual to get suppliers to built more parts. They’ve had to cut Ranger production by 50% to get ordered Broncos to customers. I’m waiting on a ’23 Ranger XLT Tremor ordered Jan13th. I know will be longer then usual. They have alot of popular models right now. Other automakers would love to have Fords problem in that regard.
Here in Canada I have been to a few dealers looking to view a Maverick. None to be seen and told any that do come in are already pre sold. No wonder sakes up here have decreased.
Well what can they do? Plant building Maverick is at absolute full capacity.. as are Fords suppliers. It’s doing all it can to get these trucks to customers. It’s most popular vehicle in NA right now. You can place an order w/ just your drivers license (to show actual customer placed order etc). Just ordered ’23 Ranger XLT Tremor Jan13th. Same plant builds Broncos! There are no Rangers on dealer lots within 150mi+ radius of me. They could sell double the Ranger easily my dealer told me .. but “supply constraints” on parts (not just semiconductor chips) is big issue. Your hearing bout it more w/Ford cause they have 4-5 models sold out! Place a Maverick order if ya want one & see if comes in timely 4ya. They will easily sell it whether you show up to get it or not.
I don’t know how they can talk about sales when they can’t even deliver
Lol these *are* delivered units.
I don’t think so
Every one built is SOLD. If you happen to see one on dealer lot means customer didn’t pick it up & it will go to ppl on cancelation lists. Or maybe available? Not for long though. No conspiracy here. 1 plant at full capacity building Mavericks. It’s a terrific truck. Santa Cruz has nothing on it. Maverick Tremor (off rd) editions avail now. 2 ppl in my neighborhood have Mavericks. I prefer Ranger & love my ’19. Can’t beat em.
That statement makes no sense whatsoever. 8500+ parts go into the average vehicle. Parts supply constraints are affecting every automaker.. but not every automaker has high demand vehicles. It’s been the fastest selling vehicle in NA last 2yrs+ for good reason. Plant building it is at full capacity.. 3-shifts / 6-7days p/wk. Every one built is already sold! Have you ordered one? There’s no deposit required! Wait times have been cut in half was told.
I ordered my maverick in Sept so for I don’t hear any thing that even trying to get start
Of getting it ready. I put a deposit on it
Me too, i order in september 2022 and heard nothing as of yet. Called dealer in Holyoke, MA and was told with the exception of taking off the Hitch, I should be in good shape for the Hybrid to be built by the end of 2023.
You will get it sooner. Consider the new Ranger possibly? Excellent truck. They in high demand as well but not like Maverick. Nothing in NA has sold as fast as Maverick trucks in last 2yrs+. Own a ’19 Ranger XLT FX4 it’s been impeccable over last 4yrs. Great MPG’s, comfort, features & capability. Best in class !
I ordered my truck in October of 2021 and it took until October of 2022 for Ford to acknowledge my order. They send an email every 45 days to tell me that nothing has changed with the status of the order which I appreciate but really wish someone would change as it’s now been about 15 months. The dealer is no help. I am not sure if I will ever see this truck.
Hi Dave, I’m sure the wait almost seems eternal by now, but if it helps, Ford recently said two things that might be a cheer-up for you: 1) supply chain is slowly improving, 2) (so much so that) Ford plans to bring on a 3rd shift for Mav this Summer.
I ordered mine 13 November 2021. Just this Thursday I finally got a build date, and Vin#. It only took Ford 1yr 2mo 2wks to finally get. I should hopefully get it now by early to mid March.
Be patient. I ordered mine the very first month they came out. It took just under 18 months to receive. I joke that I was the first to order but the I got the last 2022 but actually may not be too far off that. It’s been worth it so far. XLT hybrid, cactus gray, Lux package, moon roof, rear sliding window. I am getting between 550-580 miles per tank. Hang in there buddy.
Ford needs to step up to manufactuing what sells. It is still hard to get the Maverick and the Escape 2.5L hybrid. And it looks like the dealers are overstocked in Escapes ICE/non-hybrids. Shouldn’t be to complicated to increase manufacturing of what sells. Many people will resist buying all electric and will demand hybrids for the forseeable future. For now, this is good since our national electric grid is not up-to-the-task of all-electric.
The grid is not a static thing. It will keep pace with projected EV growth.
The electrical industry has gone through major growth periods many times before.
They will be able to handle this too (it doesn’t come like an unpredictable light switch step change it’s predictable and planable.)
This won’t be the last growth spurt either, eventually heating will move off carbon fuels too.
Lots of Grid Apocalypse disinfo being pushed by Big Oil – ignore it.
Yes, just “increase manufacturing” because you can make constrained parts appear out of thin air!
Ever consider that the non-Hybrids are easier to build because they aren’t as constrained parts wise? Last I heard, the eCVT supply was unable to keep up with demand.
I agree. People readily accept the hybrids; maybe sometime in the future (20 years or so) Electric Vehicles may be more widely accepted in the USA.
They are widely accepted now. Most folks are willing to consider a BEV as their next vehicle.
Big Oil is pushing the not yet not now maybe in 20 or 100 years theme pretty hard.
No, reality is pushing that theme pretty hard.
Care to elaborate?
I ordered an XLT hybrid in September. If I don’t get a build date scheduled this summer, I will purchase a Santa Cruz. The make great vehicles in the USA.
Oh are ya gonna buy a HYBRID Santa Cruz? No? Because they don’t exist?
Try ordering a Santa Cruz. See how much better that experience is. There’s a reason the Maverick is outselling the Santa Cruz by such a wide margin, and it isn’t because Ford is building LESS VEHICLES.
Order my maverick in Oct knowing it would be wait to get it if you order a maverick you should have known about the Wait it will get here . I have not heard of only maverick not delivered
Ordered my maverick November 3rd 2021 build date has changed 6 times new date approximately mid February 2023 IM loosing hope
Can you list up the build dates and the change to next build date please? Would be interesting to see the relationships.
I’m still waiting for a production confirmation. I’ve seen used Mavericks for sale for as much as $10,000 Over MsRp. I guess I‘ll buy another truck brand then do what dealerships are doing
You stopped short of mentioning Hyundai. Why? Is that because your pals have already mentioned that brand several times?
Useful sleuthing by Ford Authority would be to detail Maverick “supply chain issues” specifically? I have a summer 22 confirmed order (9/22) for Hybrid Lariat with Lariat Luxury, Co-Pilot360. Total Maverick sales numbers are mostly useless stats for both customers with orders & future customers shopping, lackluster reporting?
We ordered ours in October 2021,our neice ordered in September 2022 hers will be here this week!! SO disappointing!
I must be living right or something. I ordered a 2023 hybrid XLT with no additional options. Atlas Blue. Built in December 2022, delivered in January 2023. And, yes, I really like it. I’ve driven 1800 miles in 3 weeks. Exactly what I expected.
I left out that I ordered it in September of 2022.
I ordered an xlt. 2.5 9/19/22, I have never received any notice, I called ford customer service with the order # and the lady told me they had received the order and to contact my dealer to assure the right email, I did and they do but nothing yet! I’m wondering now if I will live long enough to receive it?
Don’t feel alone. I’ve been asking my dealer why Ford hasn’t emailed me and they keep saying they are asking their Ford Rep. I’m thinking this is just a delay tactic. I asked for the reps email but they won’t give it to me.
Call Ford. Seems pretty fishy that your dealer can’t put your email into Ford’s system. Ask them if/how you can move your order to another dealer. (Also check your spam folder just in case Fords mails are dropping there.)
Ordered my Maverick Lariat 11/10/21. HERE is Ford’s “IMPROVED COMMUNICATION” that I received today:
Dear Michael ,
Thank you again for your Maverick LARIAT order. We wanted to let you know that we are still up against supply chain challenges, which are causing delays with getting your vehicle into production. While we understand how frustrated you may be (we are too), rest assured, our team is working diligently and aggressively to get you behind the wheel.
We know how much anticipation there is when it comes to getting a new Ford, so we will continue to keep you updated. In the meantime, we apologize for any inconvenience and remain grateful for your patience and understanding.
NO information regarding MY build. Fortunately through MY research, I found that my truck has supposedly been built and “est” delivery date Feb 15. Why couldn’t they rell me in the email??
Worst rollout in history. Yes it has been due to supply chain issues, but how Ford communication to customers has been horrific. And now higher interest rates are going to nail me whenever it DOES arrive.
It’s nice that Ford can brag about all those 4th Quarter numbers. How about posting the numbers of unfulfilled ‘22 orders? I ordered mine in September ‘21. Got a vin number and many promised build dates. I know where it is! Probably in Mexico, Argentina, or Brazil. How about taking care of your American customers??? Sad way to run a company.
I loved you in the Munsters, your comment above not so much.
Ordered Oct 21’ Hybrid XLT arrived Jan ‘23. Dealer marks up the price 10k and does not honor my X-Plan pricing. Asked for 1k to leave the lot since I was not going to pay that markup. They looked at me like I had 10 heads. Had my family there and decided not to play the bait n switch game. Basically pre-ordered and waited 1 1/2yrs to let some sucker overpay for MY vehicle. Honolulu Ford can eat a big D.
Sorry to hear this.
Your experience is reason why FMC wants to move to no haggle on line ordering.
