Ford Patent Filed For EV Charging Pad With Wireless Charging

Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for an EV charging pad with wireless charging, Ford Authority has learned.

The patent was filed on May 27th, 2021, published on January 31st, 2023, and assigned serial number 11565594.

The Ford Authority Take

Ford has filed a number of patents revolving around different ways to charge all-electric vehicles in recent months, including one for a haptic feedback system, an in-flight charging system, and a hands-free charging system. Additionally, a company called WiTricity debuted a 2022 Ford Mustang Mach-E with wireless charging technology at last year’s Detroit Auto Show, potentially previewing the way that everyone will charge their EVs in the future. Now, this new Ford patent explores yet another way to charge all-electric vehicles without having to plug them in, too.

This particular Ford patent introduces an idea for a wireless charging pad that would be located in the rear of the vehicle, in between the wheels. It would be configured to receive electrical power from a charging station using an induction method, which would in turn charge the vehicle’s electric battery.

As for the charging station such a system would work in conjunction with, the patent notes it would utilize platforms with charging pads and actuators, all of which are secured to the ground. When the driver aligns their EV’s charging pad with the platform, it would then lift itself up and and begin charging the vehicle.

This relatively simple idea is very likely to come to fruition, given the intense focus Ford and other companies are placing on wireless charging technology. It’s also a far more convenient way to charge a vehicle that doesn’t require owners to even step foot out of the vehicle – and if wireless charging highways ever become viable, drivers may one day not have to stop to charge at all.

Tech is moving fast. EV’s are already far superior to ICE, and these kinds of innovations further point out the ICE is a dead man walking….

Why is this such a big deal? Wireless charging has been around for years.

It’s such a big deal (apparently) because they are the only company who actually applied for a patent. Besides, FA has nothing else to write about.
