Ford E-Series Sales Beat Savana, Trail Express In 2022

Ford E-Series sales saw a decline throughout the 2022 calendar year, placing the full-size van line near the bottom of its competitive segment.

During 2022, Ford E-Series sales slipped 13 percent to 32,150 units.

However, FoMoCo continued to lead the segment thanks to the Ford Transit, which dominated the competition despite a modest 0.36 percent slide, selling 99,382 units. The second-best seller in the segment, the Ram ProMaster, decreased four percent to 60,936 units last year, while the Chevrolet Express (see running Chevy Express sales) saw its sales rise 19 percent to 52,888 units to claim third place. In fourth was the Ford E-Series, while the GMC Savana (see running GMC Savana sales) followed in fifth with a 44 percent increase to 25,569 units. The discontinued Nissan NV brought up the rear, selling just three units in 2022.

Combining both of FoMoCo’s offerings in the segment, the Transit and E-Series, grants the automaker 131,532 deliveries overall, good enough for a dominant 48 percent segment share.

The Ford Authority Take

The 13 percent slip in Ford E-Series sales last year continues to be a symptom of ongoing supplier issues that have forced automakers like The Blue Oval to rein in production of certain models. One such availability issue affected certain V8 engines found under the hood of E-Series models, while another less critical constraint limited features such as Wi-Fi hotspot functions in many vehicles in Ford’s lineup, including the full-size van line.

It is also critical to note that the comparing the E-Series lineup to its competitors in the full-size van segment may not be an entirely accurate contrast, since the E-Series is available exclusively in a cutaway configuration. Meanwhile, all other models are available as full-bodied cargo and passenger vans and, in most cases, also as cutaways.

Refreshed Ford E-Series

The Ford E-Series is slated for a midcycle refresh, and Ford Authority recently spied a camo-clad unit undergoing testing, sporting a slightly different grille than the current models, along with styling changes evident in the vehicle’s front bumper to set it apart.

As a reminder, the E-Series line is assembled at the Ford Ohio Assembly plant. It sources power from the Ford 7.3L Godzilla V8 gasoline engine, which is offered in two versions. The standard tune delivers optimal power and torque, while the optional tune is optimized for better fuel economy, although this configuration sacrifices horsepower and torque in order to achieve maximum fuel efficiency. Ford very recently dropped the economy tune for the E-Series.
