The Ford Edge has certainly garnered its fair share of praise in recent years – much of it coming from Consumer Reports – which previously named the crossover as one of the best for less than $40k, one of the most reliable mid-size crossovers, one of the most reliable three-year-old vehicles, and one of the safest and most reliable three-year-old vehicles. Now, the Edge’s list of accolades has expanded yet again, as the crossover has ranked third in the mid-size crossover segment of J.D. Power’s 2023 U.S. Dependability Study, joining the Ford Fusion, which finished as the third-ranked mid-size sedan in the same study.
While both the Ford and Lincoln brands suffered massive drops in this year’s study, that disappointing result had nothing to do with the Ford Edge, which ranked only behind the Chevy Blazer and Hyundai Santa Fe as the most dependable 2020 model year mid-size crossovers on the market, which is certainly a notable achievement in a world full of inflated prices.
The 2023 U.S. Vehicle Dependability Study is based on the responses of 30,062 original owners of 2020 model-year vehicles after three years of ownership. It examines how 2020 model-year vehicles are currently performing in terms of quality, component replacement, and appeal and intends to help automotive manufacturers design and build better vehicles to stand the test of time and promote higher resale value. This year’s study covers 184 specific problem areas across nine major vehicle categories – climate; driving assistance; driving experience; exterior; features/controls/displays; infotainment; interior; powertrain; and seats.
“The used-vehicle market has helped sustain dealers’ profitability in the past couple of years, but they need to know which vehicles to have on their lots,” said Jonathan Banks, vice president and general manager of vehicle valuations at J.D. Power. “Having vehicles with strong dependability scores will nurture a positive brand perception and drive foot traffic.”
