The Ford Kuga and Puma have been two of the automaker’s best-selling models in Europe for some time now, and as such, both may wind up as the very last two ICE-powered Blue Oval vehicles on sale in that region as the automaker aims to convert its passenger vehicle lineup to EVs by 2030. The Ford Kuga PHEV was Europe’s best-selling plug-in hybrid in 2021, while the crossover in general landed on the region’s top 20 best-selling list for 2022, in fact. Now, according to new data from Jato Dynamics, the Ford Kuga PHEV retained its spot as the best-selling plug-in hybrid in Europe in 2022, too.
FoMoCo sold a grand total of 57,924 Ford Kuga PHEV models last year, which represents a 25 percent year-over-year increase. That figure was also good enough to beat out every other plug-in hybrid on sale in Europe, including the BMW 3-Series (32,405 units sold), Volvo XC40 (31,324), Hyundai Tucson (29,043), Volvo XC60 (28,409), Peugeot 3008 (28,358), Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross (27,134), Jeep Compass (25,860), Lynk & Co 01 (25,798), and Kia Sportage (25,444).
As for the entire Ford Kuga lineup, that model finished the year as Europe’s 19th best-selling new vehicle – compared to 16th for the Puma – as The Blue Oval moved 127,266 units of the crossover last year. That represents a 19 percent year-over-year increase, helping to improve the Kuga’s position on the sales charts from 30th place in 2021.
Meanwhile, the overall new car market in Europe continued to decline with a grand total of 11,309,310 sales – a 4.1 percent year-over-year decrease, as well as the lowest level since 1985. “Shortages of new vehicles at dealerships, inflation, and the energy crisis, all proved to be major challenges for the already troubled market last year,” said Felipe Munoz, Global Analyst at JATO Dynamics. “The fallout of the pandemic, followed by the semi-conductor shortage throughout 2021 and 2022, was only compounded by Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and subsequent energy price increases, impacting consumer confidence and spending.”
