Ford Maverick Sales Grew 461 Percent During 2022

Ford Maverick sales remained solidly ahead of its single rival in the compact pickup segment, the Hyundai Santa Cruz, throughout the 2022 calendar year.

During 2022, Ford Maverick sales increased 461 percent, selling 74,370 units. Comparatively, the Santa Cruz saw its sales increase 263 percent to 36,480 units, selling less than half as many units as the Maverick last year.

For the sake of context, below, we’ve provided sales data for midsize pickup trucks. While these pickups technically slot in at one segment above the Maverick, there is often cross-shopping between the two segments.

The midsize mainstream pickup segment contracted five percent during 2022, posting 565,382 sales. Of that, the Maverick’s big brother, the Ford Ranger accounted for 57,005 sales, underperforming the Maverick.

The Ford Authority Take

Sales figures for the Ford Maverick continue to prove that the compact pickup is highly desirable, outselling its only direct competitor in its segment by more than double last year, and also dominating the Ranger. In fact, the automaker is adding a third shift at the Hermosillo Assembly plant in Mexico in July 2023 to facilitate increased production of the Maverick in response to its high demand. It should be noted that Maverick sales began in late 2021, another reason why it posted such a drastic increase in sales.

The 2023 model year brought minor changes and updates to the Maverick. Perhaps the most notable addition was that of the Tremor Off-Road Package, which adds quite a few off-road-ready mechanical and equipment upgrades to the truck right off the showroom floor. As such, we expect the new Tremor Package to likely continue to drive demand for the already highly sought-after pickup, making it one of the most coveted vehicles on the market.

Almost no one is ordering the Tremor Pkg with it $2995.00 price tag and reduced EPA estimates of 3 to 4 MPG.

When unencumbered by production constraints and high dealer add-ons, how many Mavericks Ford can sell is an unknown.

The real unknown is how many can be delivered.

Here it is Feb 2023, and no word regarding production start date for the 2023 model. We ordered on the first morning of the open orderbank. Yet, NO word on the actual production start date. 😔

Depending on add-ons, first in line were all the people who ordered as long ago as Fall 2021 who STILL have not received their trucks (who had to roll over to the 23 model year. Ordered 11/10/21 Maverick Lariat Hybrid-should be here in TX by end of month (supposedly). Patience is a virtue.

Is the problem a shortage of hybrid engines? I’ve been waiting for 14 months for mine. I’d sure like to know when approximately I’ll get it.

Are those sales numbers based on delivered vehicles. Or is it based on deposits taken from potential customers.

    1. Rick

I’m wondering the same thing. A “sale” should equal a delivered vehicle, not simply an order. Using this definition, how much did Maverick sales grow? Ya can’t count your chickens until they hatch you know.

Sale numbers are based on delivered units to customers, does not include any for dealer stock. I got my Maverick in 13 weeks when they first order bank opened up in July 2021. I have already traded it in after owning it for 13 months.

The analysis of the Maverick sales numbers is complete bologna. Way to compare 3 months of 2021 production, 4 if you want to count the 506 vehicles manufactured and sold in the startup month, to an entire year of 2022 production.

A realistic analysis would be to compare Oct-Dec 2021 against any of Jan-Mar, Apr-Jun, Jul-Sept, Oct-Dec 2022. With this analysis, at best, 2022 Maverick sales are up approximately 80% over 2021.

I ordered a 2022 Hybrid, no extras, on 12 August 2022. I received an email on Sept. 16, 2022, confirming my order. To date I have not received a date of production notification. Does Ford Authority have any idea of when I will receive a date of production notification?

    1. Dr. Daniel

Ford has no idea what is going on. So not be surprised if you do not hear anything by august 2023 your order may get cancelled.

I suggest emailing your dealership and keeping a written record of all responses.

We ordered our maverick the first day the ordering started. We only received confirmation of that order. No other information has been provided. I’m sure it will take at least eight months to process and hopefully receive our truck. Ford is very lax about information and production. I just wish they would give us more hope on production data. Still waiting for a vin number.

When can you order 2024 Mavericks?

    Reply
    1. Joe

Sometime Summer of 2023. No one knows the real date. If they complete the 2023 model run and not carry any over for 2024 it is usually August to September.

Why was the Honda Ridgeline completely ignored in this article? Because it won almost every comparison in the mid-size truck shoot-outs?

Some people are wondering about the fact that they ordered their Maverick as soon as orders opened. Well that might be true, BUT I ordered mine as a 2022 on the 11 of October of 2021, it never got here so Ford put our later orders before new orders. So sorry but I ordered mine 16 months ago, and I have a build date of 3/3 2023. As soon as mine is delivered I will gladly get out of your way so you can get your Maverick.

That is because it is more car like and 10s of thousands cheaper than your “big gas drinking trucks. It comes standard with a hybrid engine. That is what people are looking for too. You can’t get your hands on one. You have to order it in a certain timeframe.
