As Ford Authority reported last year, Hau Thai-Tang – a 34-year Blue Oval employee who last served as Ford’s chief industrial platform officer – retired this past October. In his time at FoMoCo, Thai-Tang headed up the design, development, and the launch of the fifth-generation 2005 Ford Mustang, and also led product development and purchasing organizations amid a number of key product launches such as the Ford Bronco, Ford Maverick, Ford Puma, Ford Mustang Mach-E, and Ford F-150 Lightning. Now, Hau Thai-Tang has decided to put his experience and knowledge to good use after joining the board of directors at BorgWarner.
“We are pleased to welcome Hau to BorgWarner’s Board of Directors,” said Alexis P. Michas, non-executive chairman of the board of BorgWarner. “Hau’s extensive industry experience and his forward-looking perspective around electrification transformation make him a solid complement to our board.”
Ford and BorgWarner have long enjoyed a prosperous relationship as manufacturer and supplier, too. As Ford Authority previously reported, the Ford Mustang Mach-E utilizes BorgWarner’s Integrated Drive Module (iDM), which enables an efficient, smooth ride capable of handling 4,278 Nm of axle torque and input speeds up to 13,800 rpm. The company also supplies transfer cases for some of the most popular four-wheel-drive FoMoCo vehicles, including the F-Series, Explorer, Expedition, Transit, as well as the Lincoln Aviator and Navigator.
Now, Thai-Tang – who holds a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Carnegie Mellon University and a Master of Business Administration from the University of Michigan Stephen M. Ross School of Business – will use his expertise to assist BorgWarner with future decisions following his role at Ford leading global research and advanced engineering, product development, design, manufacturing engineering, purchasing, and supply chain teams as its chief industrial platform officer.

BorgWarner ‘1’…. Ford ‘0’. Nobody retires at 34. This is how Ford manages internal differences of opinion on engineering and design… you get to ‘retire’.
Mike, he retired after 34 years of service to Ford Motor Co. Hau Thai Tang is one of the nicest people I met while working for Ford. He was very competent but, more importantly, he was a real gentleman.
Yes…that is my point… you said it more distinctly…. he is one of the best. I am amazed that Ford could not/did not keep him in the fold.
Sometimes people just get tired and want to do new things.
His presence on the board of Borg will be beneficial to Ford.
I wish him all luck and success!
