While it’s been gone for a long time now, the Ford F-150 SVT Lightning remains a popular entity on the auction circuit, as well as with at least one big-time celebrity. However, the vast majority of those examples are either bone stock or modified in a way that extracts even more performance from the street-focused pickup, but that certainly isn’t the case with this wild, modified 1993 Ford F-150 SVT Lightning that’s currently up for auction at Bring a Trailer.
The Blue Oval only built 5,276 examples of the 1993 Ford F-150 SVT Lightning pickup, making each one a pretty special collectible, but that didn’t dissuade the owner of this one to turn it into a pre-running style machine that’s capable of doing things this model was never intended to do in the first place – namely, blast across the desert at high speeds, much like the modern-day F-150 Raptor that replaced it.
On the outside, those modifications include wider fenders and bed sides, a tubular front bumper, a RaceRunner skid plate, removable tailgate bars, a full-size spare and roll cage mounted in the bed, and Hella driving lights. The pickup rolls on a set of polished 15-inch Mickey Thompson beadlock wheels, which are wrapped with 35×12.5-inch Nitto Terra Grappler All Terrain tires. The interior, on the other hand, is bone stock, save for the addition of an Alpine stereo.
Mechanically speaking, the suspension on this particular SVT Lightning has been enhanced with a wider track, Twin-I-Beam components, dual front RaceRunner shocks with limiter straps, KYB shocks, and aftermarket leaf springs. Power comes from the stock 351 V8, which was originally rated to produce 240 horsepower and 340 pound-feet of torque, which flows to the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic transmission and a 4.10-geared limited-slip differential.
While it may upset some purists, this 1993 Ford F-150 SVT Lightning is, if nothing else, totally unique, and with 149k miles on the clock and some flaws here and there, it wasn’t a gem by any means – giving them a bit of a creative license to do something completely different.
