NASCAR remains a popular sport, in spite of undergoing many major changes in recent years, but some still pine for the “good old days” of that particular type of racing. For them, there have been several chances to purchased old stock cars in recent months, with both a 1993 Ford Thunderbird NASCAR racer and a 1994 Thunderbird stock car hitting the auction block. Now, something a bit newer has emerged on Bring a Trailer as it seeks a new home – this 2001 Ford Taurus NASCAR race car.
This particular 2001 Ford Taurus racer was driven by Jeremy Mayfield and Mike Wallace during its heyday, qualifying for the Daytona 500 in July 2001 and serving as a back-up vehicle for Wallace at Talladega in October 2001 before it was gifted to the driver at the end of the season. Now, it’s being sold by a dealer as a pretty cool piece of racing history.
On the outside, it’s easy to discern what this vehicle is all about thanks to its red, white, and blue #12 Mobil 1 livery, faux headlight and taillight decals, adjustable rear spoiler, sponsor graphics, Lexan windows, and black 15-inch wheels wrapped with Goodyear slicks. The same goes for the all-business cabin, which is equipped with a Kirkey fixed-back bucket seat, Simpson harnesses, a padded roll cage, door bars, a window net, an array of AutoMeter gauges, a quick-release steering wheel, and dual MSD ignition boxes.
Power for this Taurus racer comes from a 358 cubic-inch V8 that was rebuilt in 2020, at which point the restrictor plates were removed, and it sends power to the rear wheels via a four-speed manual transmission. Save for a little corrosion underneath, the car is in pretty fantastic condition, and looks ready to participate in some vintage racing events – where it will certainly get its fair share of attention.
