The Ford Authority Take
Ford Bronco family sales exhibited strength during the 2022 calendar year, showing a significant increase in both the U.S, and Canada, along with a modest uptick in Mexico. These statistics are encouraging, considering that FoMoCo – and the automotive industry at large – has been forced to navigate challenging supplier issues that have made it difficult to pace production with demand for the off-road-ready models.
In the case of the Ford Bronco Sport, the automaker has elected to withhold certain features when the supply is not available. This includes a reduced capacity amplifier option for the Bronco Sport, which is required when the regular amplifier is unavailable due to supplier constraints. Options like this have allowed The Blue Oval to keep its products rolling off the line even when it cannot include some of its features.
The Ford Bronco, meanwhile, saw a significant increase in sales volume in both the U.S. and Canada, and it’s safe to assume that the rugged pony would move even more units if dealers had them on the lots. Ford Bronco sales last year were to mostly limited to prior reservation and order holders as FoMoCo does its best to fulfill its backlog for the highly sought-after off-road SUVS. In fact, Ford has restricted 2023 Bronco orders to existing reservation or order holders to ensure that they can deliver vehicles customers have ordered. The Ford Michigan Assembly plant is busy ensuring that these vehicles are rolling off the assembly line, even prioritizing Ford Bronco production over that of the Ford Ranger, which is built at the same facility.
Bronco vs. Bronco Sport
The Ford Bronco family is currently comprised of two distinct models. The first is the body-on-frame “regular” Bronco, while the second is the unibody Bronco Sport, which is considered a crossover. Both models are encompassed by the single Bronco sub-brand focused on off-road capability and adventure.
Riding on the body-on-frame Ford T6 platform, the “regular” Bronco is available in two-door and four-door body styles. In addition, the SUV is available with two engine options, including the 2.3L I4 EcoBoost engine that produces 275 horsepower and 315 pound-feet of torque, along with the the 2.7L V6 EcoBoost engine, good for 310 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque. The all-new Bronco Raptor, meanwhile, is powered exclusively by the 3.0L V6 EcoBoost engine, which is tuned to produce 418 horsepower and 440 pound-feet of torque.
The Bronco Sport utilizes Ford’s unibody C2 platform and offers two engine options: the 1.5L I4 EcoBoost engine and the 2.0L I4 EcoBoost engine. Standard on Base, Big Bend, and Outer Banks trims, the 1.5L engine is rated at 181 horsepower and 190 pound-feet of torque. In contrast, the Badlands is outfitted with the 2.0L engine as standard, producing a more impressive 250 horsepower as well as 277 pound-feet of torque.

Neither model could keep up with demand in 2022. Bronco Sport fell off a bit because thousands couldn’t be delivered due to the fuel injector issue. Bronco and Bronco Sport could both sell more in 2023 if Ford could simply make more available for sale.
