Though it may likely become one of the last ICE-powered Blue Oval vehicles on sale in Europe amid the automaker’s all-electric transition, the Ford Kuga remains one of that region’s most popular vehicles – ranking as one of Europe’s top 20 best selling cars in 2022, while the plug-in hybrid version was the top selling PHEV there in 2022, as well as January 2023. That trend continued in the month of February too, as the Ford Kuga PHEV once again topped the plug-in sales charts in Europe, according to new data from JATO Dynamics.
In February, the Ford Kuga PHEV beat out its competitors by recording sales of 3,396 units and a year-over-year increase of 16 percent, ranking it ahead of the Volvo XC60 (3,123 units sold), Lynk & Co 01 (2,623), Kia Sportage (1,971), Volvo XC40 (1,704), BMW 3-Series (1,686), Mazda CX-60 (1,636), Hyundai Tucson (1,620), Mercedes-Benz C-Class (1,618), and Jeep Compass (1,588).
Overall, the new vehicle market in Europe rose by 12 percent year-over-year to around 900,000 units in February 2023, while all-electric vehicles rose by 33 percent to 118,329 units. The PHEV segment didn’t fare so well, however, as it declined by five percent to 65,590 units compared to the same time period last year. In terms of individual countries, Italy, Spain, the UK, and Belgium all saw double-digit growth, while Sweden, Norway, Finland, and Cyprus were the only countries that experienced a decline in sales last month.
“While big structural problems persist, results from 2023 so far indicate that consumers are responding positively to more competitive offers in the market,” said Felipe Munoz, Global Analyst at JATO Dynamics. “However, rising interest rates – due to hit the market in coming months – may make consumer access to loans more difficult, potentially impacting purchasing decisions.”
