The Ford Authority Take

Sales of the regular Ford Mustang saw relatively low results throughout the 2022 calendar year. This is because of ongoing supplier issues that have negatively affected production of the pony car, thereby limiting supply at the dealer level and resulting in a decrease in sales in the U.S. and Canada.

Considering that the 2023 model year marks the final for the sixth-generation Mustang, it’s likely that sales figures for the coming year will reflect a relatively limited production run for the 2023 Ford Mustang. Additionally, the 2023 Ford Mustang brings a very minor slew of changes and updates ahead of the launch of the all-new 2024 Ford Mustang. One of the most notable 2023 Mustang changes is the deletion of the Shelby GT500 range-topper.

Ford Mustang Mach-E sales saw notable increases in every North American market. It’s clear that The Blue Oval managed to navigate around some bottlenecks in Mustang Mach-E production to have achieved its levels of performance throughout the last year, raising its supply in order to answer increased demand for the EV crossover. In fact, the Ford Mustang Mach-E was recognized as being one of the most viewed new vehicles throughout 2022, and tends to attract customers who are brand new to EVs and Ford products.

Mustang Family Details

The Ford Mustang family is currently comprised of two distinct models:

  1. The “traditional” Mustang powered by gasoline internal combustion engines (ICE), available in either a fastback-style two-door coupe or soft-top convertible body style, and
  2. A mechanically distinct model sold as the Mustang Mach-E, a battery electric vehicle available exclusively as a five-door crossover with a hatch

Riding on the Ford S550 platform, the ICE-powered Mustang is available in EcoBoost, GT, Mach 1 and Shelby GT500 variants for the 2022 model year. All of these models are assembled at the Ford Flat Rock plant in Michigan. The pony car’s engine lineup varies by trim level, and is comprised of the following ICE options:

  • Turbocharged 2.3L I4 EcoBoost – 310 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque, used in the EcoBoost models
  • Turbocharged 2.3L I4 EcoBoost HO (high output) – 330 horsepower and 350 pound-feet of torque, used in the EcoBoost HPP Package
  • Naturally-aspirated 5.0L V8 Coyote – 450 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque, used in Mustang GT models
  • Naturally-aspirated 5.0L V8 Coyote – 470 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque, used in Mustang Mach 1 models
  • Supercharged 5.2L V8 Predator – 760 horsepower and 625 pound-feet of torque, used exclusively in the Shelby GT500

Unlike the “traditional” Mustang range, the Mustang Mach-E rides on the Ford GE1 platform, which was created specifically for the Mach-E and will also underpin other electric vehicles. The architecture is loosely based on the Ford C2 platform, but features significant differences.

Manufactured solely at the Ford Cuautitlan Assembly Plant in Mexico, the Mach-E offers two battery options: the Standard Range Battery (70 kWh of usable energy and 247 estimated miles of range) and Extended Range Battery (91 kWh of usable energy and 303 estimated miles of range). The 2022 Mach-E lineup consists of:

  • Standard Range Battery (RWD models) – 266 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque, used in Select, Premium, and California Route 1 models
  • Standard Range Battery (eAWD models) – 266 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque, used in Select, Premium, and California Route 1 models
  • Extended Range Battery (RWD models) – 290 horsepower and 317 pound-feet of torque, used in Premium and California Route 1 models
  • Extended Range Battery (eAWD models) – 346 horsepower and 428 pound-feet of torque, used in Premium and California Route 1 models
  • Extended Range Battery (eAWD models) – 480 horsepower with 600 pound-feet of torque, exclusively used in the GT model
  • Extended Range Battery (eAWD models) – 480 horsepower with 634 pound-feet of torque, exclusively used in the GT Performance Edition model

It’s worth noting that the rear-wheel-drive California Route 1 is discontinued for the 2023 model year.
