Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for an external and internal vehicle door bin, Ford Authority has learned.

The Ford Authority Take
Ford has filed a number of patents in recent months exploring different ways to increase a vehicle’s storage capacity, including one for a modular storage system that could be used in pickup trucks, as well as other door-related ideas like a traffic warning system when opening doors, doors that may automatically open for drivers and passengers, and power side doors, to name just a few. Now, this new Ford patent combines those two trends into one.
This Ford patent presents us with an idea for an external and internal vehicle door bin, which could be used to store all sorts of things in a new and unique manner. Typically, this space isn’t really used for much of anything, other than cubbies and such, so it makes sense that FoMoCo might want to put it to better use.
What makes this particular idea more interesting, however, is that this storage bin would be accessible from both inside and outside the vehicle. From there, the bin could utilize both an inner panel and outer panel to separate items and make them accessible from either one side or the other, while the patent mentions that various other types of partitions could be employed here as well to better organize cargo.
As one might image, this Ford patent also mentions that the vehicle would be capable of detecting when this storage compartment is open from the outside and warn the driver before they take off, too. Otherwise, this is a pretty simple idea that aims to take advantage of some otherwise dead space in a vehicle, and it could very well wind up appearing in some future Ford vehicles.
