Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for sun visors with a window breaking tool, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on September 22nd, 2021, published on March 23rd, 2023, and assigned serial number 0090047.
The Ford Authority Take
Over the past few months, Ford has filed patents for an automatic window breaking apparatus, a sun tracking and protection system, and a multifunction car visor system. Now, this newly filed Ford patent presents us with a bit of a hybrid between all of those ideas – sun visors that would incorporate a window breaking tool inside of them, making it easy and convenient to access that device in the event of an emergency.
While sun visors are a common feature in automobiles and have been for a very long time, few owners purchase any sort of window breaking tool to keep in their vehicle, which is a bit of a problem. In the event of an accident when it isn’t possible to roll windows down via the typical power-operated switch, having a window breaking device can quite literally make the difference between life or death in some situations, which is precisely the motivation behind this new Ford patent.
Having a window breaking tool built right into a sun visor makes a ton of sense, as it would be easy to access in the event of an accident, particularly for those that simply stash those tools in places like the center console or glove box. Plus, in this case, the tool would also double as a guide rod for the visor, which means that it’s out of sight and out of mind when it isn’t needed, which hopefully means never.
This Ford patent is yet another example of a simple yet potentially incredibly useful idea that wouldn’t take much of an investment to bring to reality – which, in our opinion at least, makes it quite viable for production.

This is stupid! Ford stop making recalls and just make the stuff right. Hammer in the sun visor, really?
Until auto accidents stop happening, innovations like this will be a big help.
