Ford Patent Filed For Window Breaker Tool And Alert System

Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for a window breaker tool and alert system, Ford Authority has learned.

The patent was filed on September 20^th, 2021, published on March 23^rd, 2023, and assigned serial number 0089364.

In recent months, more than one Ford patent has been filed outlining different ways to incorporate window breaking devices into new vehicles – including one for an automatic window breaking apparatus and another for sun visors with a window breaking tool built into them. Now, this newly filed Ford patent keeps that trend going by introducing a new idea for a window breaker tool and alert system.

This new Ford patent is a bit different than those other previous filings, however, as the window breaker tool would double as a vehicle’s grab handle – specifically, in the the case of these patent drawings, inside of a Ford Bronco. If the system detects that the vehicle is submerged in water that’s above the top of the wheel, it would automatically turn on a light located on the hammer tool, and if that tool is removed and used, the system could even call for help and give authorities the vehicle’s GPS coordinates.

Typically, window breaking tools are used when a vehicle is submerged in water to the point where it may be difficult or impossible to open the window or the door, at which point the occupant can simply smash the window and escape that way. This particular patent takes that idea a step further, and also applies it to off-road situations, which makes it rather unique.

Whether or not this idea makes it to a production vehicle remains to be seen, but it’s clear that Ford is keen to explore different ways to incorporate window breaking tools into vehicles – a potentially life-saving idea that certainly has merit.
