Ford Mustang fans always have a plethora of cool examples to bid on at auction, no matter which generation of the iconic pony car they prefer. Recently, that list includes a 1968 coupe built for the track, an Aluminator-powered 1968 fastback, and a Fox Body LX with a modified Windsor V8, to name just a few. Now, that list continues to grow with yet another Fox Body pony car – this heavily-modified 1986 Ford Mustang GT up for grabs at Cars & Bids.
From the outside, this 1986 Ford Mustang GT looks relatively normal and stock, save for its black 17-inch pony wheels and Nitto NT555 front/Mickey Thompson ET Street Radial rear tires, but that isn’t the case under its skin. There, the suspension has been upgraded with a Ford Performance spring kit and Cobra brake kit, Tokico shocks, an Eibach sway bar, and Maximum Motorsports heavy-duty adjustable rear lower control arms and caster/camber plates.
That trend continues under the hood, where this Fox is now powered by a Vortec supercharged Ford 5.4L V8, which has been stroked out to 331 cubic inches and treated to a custom tune, forged rods and pistons, a Ford Performance camshaft, injectors, and headers, as well as a 70mm throttle body, polished upper and lower intake, and a laundry list of additional modifications. The result is a dyno-rated 398 horsepower and 406 pound-feet of torque, which flows to the rear wheels via a Tremec TKO 600 five-speed manual transmission and 3.73 rear gears.
The relatively stock theme continues inside the cabin, where one will find nicely reupholstered seats and new carpet, though the center console and rear seat were ditched in the name of weight savings. An aftermarket stereo system and Autometer gauges are the only other modifications, giving this classic pony car a bit of a sleeper vibe – which is certainly never a bad thing.
