Last year, the Ford E-Transit dominated the burgeoning all-electric van market by outselling its competition by a hefty margin, with a wide variety of commercial customers placing orders for the relatively new model. That includes the United States Postal Service (USPS), which ordered more than 9,000 E-Transit vans – a number big enough to potentially affect other orders, though FoMoCo is adding a third shift at the Kansas City Assembly plant to try and make up for higher-than-expected demand. Thus far, Ford E-Transit customers have racked up over 12 million miles in the U.S. and Canada, saving more than 745,000 gallons of gas and over 4.3 million kg of CO2 when compared to its gas-powered Transit equivalent, and now, we can add yet another customer to that growing list.
Meals on Wheels of San Francisco (MOWSF) – a nonprofit organization that prepares and delivers meals to the homes of seniors and people with disabilities in San Francisco and Northern San Mateo Counties – just announced that it will electrify two-thirds of its 32-vehicle fleet – which currently covers roughly 100,000 miles a year – by 2027 by adding 24 refrigerated Ford E-Transit vans. In doing this, it expects to cut its carbon footprint in half while also saving around 10 percent in fuel and maintenance costs.
Currently, MOWSF has four EV vans already in operation, along with one dual port-charging station. It plans on expanding that by building more charging stations starting later this year, while replacing five ICE vans with EVs per year for the next four years.
“Helping seniors thrive in their homes while keeping the air they breathe clean is a win-win for all,” said David Linnell, Acting CEO, Meals on Wheels of San Francisco. “When we visit seniors, we improve their health. We can do even more for their health by switching to pollution-free vehicles and at the same time, save money on fuel and reinvest those cost-savings for more meals and visits to our aging population who rely on us daily.”
