Ford Focus Among Top 25 European Best Selling Vehicles In Q1

As Ford Authority reported last December, the Ford Focus is set to be discontinued in 2025 as The Blue Oval continues to transition its European lineup to EVs, which coincides with the end of production at the Saarlouis Assembly plant in Germany, where the Focus is built. In the meantime, however, the Ford Focus continues to be a popular entity in that region, ranking among the top 25 best-selling vehicles in Europe in February. That trend continued through Q1 too, as the Focus managed to make the top 25 list alongside the Puma, while the Kuga PHEV topped the plug-in hybrid sales charts, too.

In the first quarter of 2023, the Ford Focus ranked as the 23rd best-selling new vehicle in Europe by moving 32,152 units –  a 47 percent percent increase versus Q1 2022. It trailed the Tesla Model Y, Dacia Sandero, Volkswagen T-Roc, Peugeot 208, Opel/Vauxhall Corsa, Toyota Yaris Cross, Fiat/Abarth 500, Dacia Duster, Renault Clio, Volkswagen Golf, Peugeot 2008, Toyota Yaris, Hyundai Tucson, Nissan Qashqai, Citroen C3, Skoda Octavia, Kia Sportage, Volkswagen Tiguan, Renault Captur, Ford Puma, Toyota C-HR, and Fiat Panda, but finished ahead of the Volkswagen T-Cross and Toyota Corolla to round out the top 25.

In terms of the overall European market, new vehicle registrations increased by 26 percent to 1,414,815 units in March, and by 17 percent in Q1 to 3,220,806 units – the highest number since 2019, which experts credit to a ramp up in production as supply chain issues begin to ease.

“The increase in registrations is largely explained by accumulated orders from months previous that could not be delivered due to the lack of components at the time,” said Felipe Munoz, Global Analyst at JATO Dynamics. “We’ll be watching closely to see how this growth is impacted by further inflationary pressure in the coming months.”

A well designed and fun little CAR. I’ve had my 2016 ST2 in Tangerine Scream, and plan on holding on to it for the foreseeable future. Maybe when the tide turns away from SUV’s and back to CARS, I’ll take another look.

If it´s one of the best selling cars in Europe, why discontinue it? This is a car that can have an EV version. It´s main rival in Europe, the VW Golf and top seller of the segment, has already an EV version. Not everybody like SUV´s or crossovers or is willing to buy one no matter what. The Puma is not a substitute for the Focus. So, why letting a whole market segment go particularly in Europe where this market segment is one of the strongest?
