Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for an augmented reality system for parking that could be used in future Ford vehicles, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on September 17th, 2021, published on March 23rd, 2023, and assigned serial number 0087202.
The Ford Authority Take
Ford has filed a number of patents centered around augmented reality in recent months, including one for an augmented reality display for locating vehicles, an augmented reality system that combats sun glare, and an augmented reality system with sharing capability. Now, this newly filed patent explores a way that future Ford vehicles could use that same technology to make parking a bit easier.
Vehicle parking assistance technology has become more prevalent in recent years, with many different types of automakers offering – at the very least – the ability to let a vehicle parallel park itself. This new Ford patent takes that idea a step further by providing an interface that allows users to operate a vehicle remotely using a steering controller, which could then be used to maneuver the vehicle into a parking spot.
The purpose of this system is to address challenges present in current Level 3 and 4 autonomous systems, which have proven difficult to “teach” how to properly park a vehicle. As an alternative, this system would allow users to do so using either a remote control, their smartphone, or a key fob.
This type of system would make parking an autonomous vehicle easier, but it’s also easier to park a vehicle when standing outside of it as well. Since some automakers – such as Hyundai – already offer the ability to move a vehicle forward or backward using the key fob, it also isn’t exactly totally unfeasible, either.
