The Ford Authority Take
Ford has filed a number of towing-related patents in recent months as it aims to maintain its position as America’s favorite maker of trucks, including one for a retractable drop leg trailer assist system, a vehicular remote control system, adjustable towing mirrors, and a trailer sideswipe avoidance system. Now, this newly filed patent introduces an idea for an auto-sliding fifth wheel hitch that could very well be used in future Ford pickups.
The concept behind this new patent is a fifth wheel hitch that’s mounted in the bed of a pickup as is the case traditionally, though it would also utilize a carriage capable of sliding along rails between two positions in response to movement of the the head, which is also mounted on the carriage. Additionally, a fixed component with guides could provide the base for a sliding apparatus.
Fifth wheel hitches have become increasingly popular in recent years for those looking to tow large, heavy campers and semi-trailers, as they provide greater stability and are affordable, to boot. Users are also able to tow heavier loads using a fifth-wheel hitch, and pull campers with additional space designed to hang over the beds of trucks. Designing a hitch that improves maneuverability, which is the case here, seems like a great way to take advantage of the fifth wheel’s popularity, and make it even more viable for those looking to tow more with their pickups.
