The Ford Mustang is one of the more commonly-seen vehicles popping up for sale at auctions of all types, and that includes special versions of the iconic pony car, too. Recently, we’ve seen everything from a 2012 Ford Mustang Shelby GT500 convertible to a supercharged Ford 5.4L V8 powerplant from an S197-gen model cross the auction block, as well as pretty much everything in between. Now, we have something extra special to share – this heavily-modified 2012 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet, which is currently up for grabs at Bring a Trailer.
Just 50 examples of the 2012 Ford Mustang Cobra Jet were produced in total, and this is number nine – making it a special machine right off the bat. Previously owned and raced by NHRA driver Charlie Cooper, the Race Red track-only pony car features silver Cobra Jet graphics, a cowl hood, a parachute, hood pins, a rear diffuser, and a set of forged 15-inch Weld racing wheels wrapped with Mickey Thompson racing tires, which ensures that everyone looking at it knows that this is a vehicle built specifically for dominating the drag strip.
The same goes for the all-business cabin, which is long on safety and short on frills, with features such as a single fixed-back racing seat, a RaceQuip harness, aluminum pedals, a fuel cell, a window net, a RaceTek data logger, a Sparco steering wheel, and a roll cage. Ford Performance handled suspension duties underneath, adding goodies such as adjustable dampers, while Strange Engineering low-drag racing brakes slow it down.
That last piece is important given the fact that this Cobra Jet is powered by a de-stroked, 314 cubic-inch version of the Ford 5.4L V8 that’s been modified with a Coyote crank, aluminum rods, Diamond pistons, custom cams, CNC-ported heads, an MCRP intake manifold, Bigstuff3 Gen 3 PRO SEFI control module, and a single 76mm Precision Turbo turbocharger, with power flowing to the rear wheels via a two-speed PowerGlide automatic transmission and a Strange Engineering 9-inch differential with 4.29 gears.
Though it may not be street legal, this rare and very special Mustang is certainly a thrilling weekend toy, one that’s more than capable of putting a smile on one’s face every time the Christmas tree lights up.
