The folks behind Hoonigan – the late Ken Block’s own company – have hosted some seriously entertaining drag races between two very different vehicles on numerous occasions over the years via its This Vs That series, including a 521 cubic-inch V8-powered 1980 Ford Bronco and a tiny Honda Grom motorcycle, the famous Ford Mustang Hoonicorn against a trophy truck, and another showdown between Block’s Hoonicorn and a 4,000 horsepower Chevrolet Corvette. Now, Hoonigan is back with yet another installment of This Vs That, this time pitting an 850 horsepower Ford F-150 against a heavily-modified Mazda RX-7.
In this case, the rotary-powered RX-7 looks like a true ringer thanks to its turbocharged powerplant, which cranks out a whopping 1,000 horsepower. Better yet, that power flows to the wheels via a six-speed sequential gearbox for lightning quick shifts, and it has around 3,500 pounds to move down the track.
In the other lane, we have a true sleeper in this Ford F-150 regular cab, short bed pickup, which is packing a Whipple Gen 5 3.0L supercharged Ford 5.0L V8 Coyote engine under its hood, which sends a healthy 800 horsepower to all four wheels via the quick-shifting 10-speed automatic transmission. With around 4,000 pounds to move, it is already at a bit of a disadvantage when compared to the more powerful RX-7, but as we’re all well aware, paper wins don’t always equate to real-world victories.
That’s the case in race number one of three, as the Ford F-150 leaps off the line – catching the Mazda driver sleeping – and manages to hold off the import, even though it was making up ground quickly toward the top end. In round two, the RX-7 gets a car length advantage, but launch control issues once again net it a loss. Thus, these two machines never make it to a third round, and the Ford F-150 claims a decisive victory on this particular day, even if it can be at least partly attributed to technical issues.

Funny the guy who lost twice is wearing a full safety suit and equipment while the the other guy is in a shirt without helmet or wearing seatbelt
