Back in February, Ford Authority reported that The Blue Oval was considering a more more off-road capable version of the Ford Expedition, which would presumably slot in the big SUV’s lineup ahead of the existing Timberline, which debuted for the 2022 model year. Shortly thereafter, Ford Authority spied a very interesting Expedition prototype that could potentially be a Raptor version of the long-running model, though it’s currently unclear if that’s the case. Regardless, with a refresh currently in the works, Ford Authority spotted a 2025 Ford Expedition prototype covered in heavy camo earlier this month, and now, we’ve also come across a 2025 Ford Expedition Timberline, too.
Like the recently-spied prototype, this 2025 Ford Expedition is covered in substantial camouflage, concealing any potential changes that might lie underneath. However, we can see what appears to be a new front clip, what could potentially be a new hood, a new liftgate and taillight design, and a rear wiper that’s been relocated to a position where it’s out of sight – potentially underneath the third brake light.
What’s more interesting are the obvious clues that suggest we are indeed looking at a 2025 Ford Expedition Timberline – chiefly, the wheels, which sport basically the same design as the current model. However, the tires on this prototype are General Grabbers rather than the Goodyear Wrangler Territory rubber that comes on the current Expedition Timberline.
The current Expedition Timberline features not only the aforementioned Timberline-exclusive wheels and 33-inch Goodyear Wrangler A/T tires, but also Active Orange accents, a unique front grille, improved approach and departure angles, a wider track, and 10.6 inches of ground clearance.
Mechanically, the Expedition Timberline is powered by the twin-turbocharged Ford 3.5L V6 EcoBoost H.O. engine, which in this guise produces 440 horsepower and 510 pound-feet of torque and is mated to the 10-speed automatic transmission. Underneath, all of these bits are protected by underbody shielding borrowed from the Ford F-150 Raptor, while Trail Turn Assist helps make navigating tight trails a little easier. While it’s currently unclear if all of these features will carry over to the refreshed model, it seems certain that at least some will, judging by this prototype.
We’ll have more on the 2025 Ford Expedition soon, so be sure and subscribe to Ford Authority for more Ford Expedition news and around-the-clock Ford news coverage.
