Ford Motor Company has filed a patent for adaptive cruise control activation tech, Ford Authority has learned.
The patent was filed on November 23rd, 2021, published on May 25th, 2023, and assigned serial number 0159029.
The Ford Authority Take
More than one Ford patent filed in recent memory has sought to improve adaptive cruise control systems as we know them, including one filing for an enhanced adaptive cruise control system, as well as another outlining an idea for a low visibility adaptive cruise control system. Now, this newly filed Ford patent keeps that trend going by introducing an idea for technology that would be able to activate adaptive cruise control system a bit more easily.
This is notable because currently, adaptive cruise control systems must be activated by the user, after which their vehicle is able to reduce the speed of the vehicle when it’s approaching a slower moving vehicle ahead, ensuring that it keeps a safe distance between the two. When that vehicle is no longer in front of it or if it decides to speed up, the system accelerates back to the set speed.
This proposed system would be able to determine which scenarios might call for the activation of adaptive cruise control, then prompt the user and ask if they wish to engage that particular feature. This would still enable the user to retain control of when adaptive cruise control would be activated, preventing any unexpected actions from the vehicle itself, but could do so with fewer steps – not to mention recommend that the feature be turned on in scenarios when the driver might want it to be used.
