The Ford Authority Take

With off-roading arguably more popular than ever, Ford has filed a number of patents related to that activity in the past few months, including one for an off-road drivability guidance system, a detachable lighting assembly for vehicles, an automatic drive model lighting system, and dimmable external vehicle lighting, to name just a few. Now, this newly filed patent introduces an idea for an off-road lighting control system that may be used in future Ford vehicles, too.

Ford Patent Off-Road Lighting Control System

These days, aftermarket off-road lighting is one of the more popular additions folks make to their vehicles, but there’s just one problem with that – many of these lighting systems aren’t designed to be integrated into a vehicle’s original control systems. As such, owners may not know whether or not those lights are on or off, as would be the case with a factory-installed lighting system or one that’s designed to work seamlessly with a vehicle.

The problem with this is, off-road lighting is typically far too bright to be used on public roads, and can create a serious hazard for others if it is – not to mention the fact that using these lights on those types of roads is prohibited in many areas. Ford’s solution for this is relatively simple – create a system that is capable of detecting the status of off-road lights, even if they aren’t designed to work with a vehicle’s original control systems.

The system would use location-based data to determine whether or not a vehicle is on a public road or an off-road trail, then deactivate the off-road lighting if it’s traveling on the former. It’s a simple idea that could very well prove useful in the real world, and as such, may eventually wind up being available on future Ford vehicles.
