The Ford Authority Take
Ford has filed a large number of seat-related patents in recent months, including one for interchangeable seat cushions, automatic heated and cooled seats, seats with inflatable blankets, a rear seat HVAC system for the third row, a transformable rear seat for vehicles, a vehicle seat with adaptive ventilation, and a vehicle seat with liquid cooling, to name just a few. Now, this newly filed patent introduces an idea for seats with a lower leg support that may be used in future Ford vehicles as well.
As one might imagine, the premise of this patent is quite simple – to improve passenger comfort by adding lower leg support to a seat, a feature that is already quite prevalent on some airplanes and in certain vehicles – though it’s typically reserved for higher-end sections of planes and for more luxurious and pricey vehicles.
What sets this idea apart from existing seats with lower leg support is the fact that the apparatus would be stored completely underneath the seat when it’s not in use, rather than just retracting downward. When the user wants the extra support, they could press a button, at which point the section would extend downward and out, providing a little extra comfort on those long journeys. A simple yet potentially useful idea, it wouldn’t be surprising to see this feature wind up in future Ford vehicles at some point in time.
