Between a misguided two-tire gamble and a handful of wrecks, the NASCAR Ford teams posted mixed results on Monday, May 1st in the rain-delayed Cup Series race at Dover Motor Speedway – and walked away disappointed while the No. 19 Toyota TRD Camry of Martin Truex Jr. celebrated in Victory Lane.
Things started going south for The Blue Oval during Stage 1 of the race, when the No. 1 Chevy Camaro ZL1 of Ross Chastain made contact with the No. 15 NASCAR Ford Mustang of Brennan Poole, who is currently subbing for Cody Ware, who is currently suspended due to being arrested. Poole’s No. 15 Mustang spun, causing the No. 5 Camaro of Kyle Larson to slam into him.
“There’s nothing more that I could do in the situation. I haven’t really seen the replay, but it felt like I just got ran over really for no reason 80 laps into the race,” Poole said of Chastain after exiting his damaged Mustang race car. “Doesn’t make any sense to me. I guess that’s something he’s been known to do here recently. Probably needs to get his butt whooped.”
Meanwhile, the No. 22 NASCAR Ford of reigning Cup champion Joey Logano had a terrible day. After struggling with the handling of his race car, he lost control of the No. 22 Mustang on Lap 386, slamming the wall and catching fire.
“I don’t know,” Logano said. “There was fire, so something broke. Something broke a long time ago, like halfway through the race. We were slow and the car wouldn’t turn. Whatever it was, it finally broke.”
Ryan Blaney, driver of the No. 12 NASCAR Ford, found himself in a good position to win on the restart caused by Logano’s No. 22 Mustang. Blaney’s team elected to put two tires on the No. 12 Mustang, putting him on the front row beside Truex’s No. 19 Camry, who also took two tires. However, Truex’s No. 19 Camry eventually got away from the No. 12 Mustang of Blaney, relegating him to a third place finish. Like Truex, Blaney had been winless since 2021 – although Blaney will have to find Victory Lane another day.
