Ford EV partner SK On is one of the larger players in the world of all-electric vehicle batteries, working not only with the automaker as one half of its BlueOvalSK joint venture, but also other companies such as Hyundai. Both have also secured their fair share of funding in recent weeks, which will help drive continued growth moving forward. Now, shortly after SK On – which is the EV battery-focused division of the larger SK Group – received an Edison award for its next-generation technology – the company as a whole has been named as one of Time‘s 100 Most Influential Companies of 2023.
“South Korea’s second largest conglomerate is making big bets on American-made EV batteries,” Time wrote. “SK’s partnerships with automakers to build new battery factories – fueled by federal clean-vehicle credits that encourage domestic production – will help reduce U.S. reliance on China and create a southern battery belt. In April, SK announced plans with Hyundai for a $5 billion plant in Georgia. A joint venture with Ford now under way involves two massive battery facilities together worth $11.4 billion, including one in Kentucky that will be the country’s largest. ‘The U.S. is showing what can happen when the right conditions converge to support EV growth,’ said chairman Chey Tae-won.”
To come up with this year’s 100 Most Influential Companies list, Time collected nominations across numerous sectors and polled its global network of contributors and correspondents, as well as outside experts. Editors then evaluated each of those companies on several key factors, including impact, innovation, ambition, and success.
Moving forward, the Ford EV partner is focused on continuing its rapid growth by investing more than $85 billion in green technologies by 2030 as it continues to build new EV battery plants across the globe. The company is also aiming to to slash its annual carbon emissions by 200 million tons in 2030.
